insights from the Psalms.

“The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!

Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy!”

Our response

“I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will make music. I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil.”

Practical advice on how to live as a Christian.

“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”
James 4:1-3, 7-8, 10 ESV

Our walk as a Christian is about transforming our minds and perspective. It isn’t just doing different things, it is being a new person. Draw near to God. Seek him.

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight an

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. A Final note on Jesus the high priest. The Hebrew writer makes it clear that when there is a change in priesthood, there is a change in the covenant God has with mankind. Note the covenant of grace is superior to the Mosaic covenant .

“This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭7‬:‭22‬-‭28‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We have read that Jesus is superior to angels and superior to Moses. In the Old Testament, there were priests and they came from the line of Levi. But we see here that in the New Covenant we have a new and superior high priest.

“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭14‬-‭16‬ ‭ESV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/59/heb.4.14-16.ESV

Jesus’ human lineage traces to Judah, so note that his high priesthood isn’t levitical, but traces back to Melchizedek, King of Salem. (See Genesis 14).

“In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭7‬-‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/59/heb.5.7-10.ESV

“For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.”

Yesterday , we pointed out that Jesus is superior to the angels. Here, we see he is superior to Moses.

“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭6‬ ‭ESV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/59/heb.3.1-6.ESV

Moses was a great human servant. But he wasn’t perfect. Jesus is eternal. Jesus doesn’t just serve in the house, He built the house. In fact, he was there at creation. We read everything was made by him, for him and through him.

Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful

The Hebrew writer wants to make it clear that Jesus is superior.

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/59/heb.1.1-4.ESV

Superior, but sent on a mission.

“But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/59/heb.2.9-10.ESV

Let us be thankful that Jesus was willing to leave perfection and come to earth to pay our sin debt on the cross.

But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for

God’s lament.

““But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. Oh, that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!”

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”
‭‭Titus‬ ‭2‬:‭11‬-‭14‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Salvation is available to all. And once saved, we are commanded to run from evil. Let us be thankful for God’s mercy.

“…he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

Final note from the letters to Timothy.

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/59/2ti.4.1-4.ESV

Note the second part. We, described in the Bible as sheep, are so vulnerable to false teaching. Our minds are prone to drift. Our rebellious side wants to follow what we want to hear versus what we need to hear. Let us remain committed to The Word, all of it.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove,

“Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭1‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ ‭ESV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/59/2ti.1.13-14.ESV

Paul urges Timothy to be committed to the message, to guard it like a meaningful deposit. Why?

Because this isn’t just any message .

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭ESV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/59/2ti.3.16.ESV

The Bible was written by human authors, but God was in control. He supernaturally guided these men to record exactly what He wanted us to hear. Thus the Bible isn’t just a book, it is The Word of God.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness
