Good news for transgender and nonbinary people from the United Methodist Church in Louisiana!

“On the final day of the 2026 Louisiana Annual Conference, members unanimously approved a resolution affirming transgender and non-binary people…. The petition, submitted by Caleb Porter, a lay delegate, affirms transgender and non-binary people as people of sacred worth, created in the image of God, and deserving of the same legal rights as cisgender people.

….In his remarks, Porter referenced a 2023 study finding that transgender and non-binary youth who had at least one accepting adult in their life had significantly lower odds of attempting su***de. He asked the Conference to consider the impact of its public witness.”

This Sunday’s scripture is from Isaiah, Chapter 43:1-5.

Food for thought:

~How do the metaphors of the waters/rivers and the fire represent the specific trials, struggles, and afflictions God's people faced then—and face today?~Verse 2 states: "they shall not overwhelm you" and "you shall not be burned." Does this mean believers will never face hardship, or does it point to a deeper spiritual protection?

This Sunday’s scripture is Romans 12:1-12.
Food for thought:

Looking at the practical marks of a true Christian in verses 9-12 (e.g., sincere love, hating what is evil, showing hospitality), which area is easiest for you, and which requires the most effort?

A little Minnesota history as we welcome the month of June, courtesy of the Minnesota Historical Society:

1836
Charles Nathaniel Hewitt is born in Vermont. He led the state legislature to create the state board of health in 1872, making Minnesota the third state to do so. Dr. Hewitt died in 1910.

1839
Forty-seven soldiers at Fort Snelling are confined to the guardhouse for violating orders about visiting the saloon of Henry Menk, near modern Fort Road and Munster Avenue, in St. Paul.

1859
Logs driven by floodwaters knock down the second and third bridges built over the Mississippi River, in Minneapolis. The first, the Father Louis Hennepin Suspension Bridge, remains standing.

1916
Forty miners on the Mesabi Iron Range walk off the job at the start of a massive strike, coordinated by the ethnically diverse rank and file, with help from experienced organizers from the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Scab workers undermine the strike, and the strikers concede defeat after three and a half months. However, by December, Oliver Iron Mining Company, a subsidiary of US Steel, compromises with pay raises and other small reforms. The company maintained its anti-union stance until 1943.

1990
Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev spends a few hours in the Twin Cities.

1999
Duluth's Ed Hommer is the first double amputee to reach the top of Mount McKinley (20,320 feet). He had lost his legs to frostbite after a plane crash on the mountain in 1981.

Food For Thought As PRIDE MONTH begins!

Did you know?

That nowhere in the Bible does it say that being gay is a sin!

A rigorous examination of the original Hebrew and Greek texts reveals that the modern concept of a loving, consensual same-sex relationship does not appear in the Bible, and therefore, the Bible never explicitly condemns being gay as it is understood today.

The word "homosexual" did not exist when the Bible was written; it was coined in the late 19th century and first appeared in an English Bible translation in 1946 (the Revised Standard Version). Scholars argue that translating ancient Greek words like arsenokoitai as "homosexuals" misrepresents the original meaning, which likely referred to economic or sexual exploitation, such as pederasty or prostitution.

Passages often cited as condemnations (such as those in Leviticus) were written within an ancient Near Eastern context focused on ritual purity, idolatry, and maximizing population growth for tribal survival, rather than a moral judgment on innate sexual orientation.

Where the New Testament mentions same-sex behavior (such as in the Roman world), ancient writers were reacting to specific cultural practices of their time, which typically involved abusive power dynamics, such as master-slave exploitation or prostitution, rather than egalitarian, committed relationships.

We at White Bear Lake United Methodist Church believe that all of us are loved by God and we welcome our LGBTQIA friends with open arms and loving hearts! ❤️🌈🏳️‍🌈

Happy Pride Month! 👍
