Memorial Day invites us into sacred remembrance.

We remember the lives given in service.
We remember the families who continue to grieve.
We remember the cost of conflict and the enduring need for peace.

May we be people who honor sacrifice by choosing peace.

Small acts of generosity become powerful messages of hope.

Through each donation drive, our community is reminded that caring for our Common Home also means caring for one another — especially our neighbors in need. We are grateful for the spirit of welcome that continues to unite our community throughout the year. 💛

Giving Hope Year Round

"The opportunities to join with the whole community to compassionately reach out to groups in need
through the various drives (such as the women at Bethany house, the residents of Canticle Place, and local refugees through Exodus) reinforce the warm welcome and cooperative spirit we always feel at OLA."
– Laura Bauhof, faith community member

Care for our Common Home also means caring for our neighbors. 🌎💛

Throughout 2025, our Wheaton Franciscan community came together in generosity and solidarity through seasonal donation drives supporting refugees, asylum seekers, food pantries, and transitional housing communities.

From packing household items for newly arrived refugee families during Lent, to providing Thanksgiving meals for local families, to donating Christmas gift cards, each act of giving became a reminder that Laudato Si’ calls us to respond to one another with compassion, dignity, and hope.

We are deeply grateful to all who helped turn generosity into action.

In March of 2025, Wheaton Franciscan department heads, selected associates, Sisters, and Covenant Companions gathered for Courageous Conversations—sessions led by Sr. Patricia Chappell and Sr. Anne-Louise Nadeau, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

Together, participants reflected on the personal and systemic impacts of racism, power, and privilege, while exploring transformational ways to build anti-racist relationships rooted in transparency, collaboration, and an abundant worldview.

This work continues as our Laudato Si' Action Planning Circle discusses future opportunities for learning, reflection, and transformation.

As part of our Laudato Si’ Week celebration, we’re highlighting the meaningful ways our community gathers in relationship with one another and with Creation. 🌿🔥

From May through early fall, the Wheaton Franciscans host “S’mores & More,” an evening of faith-sharing, fellowship, and campfire treats in the beautiful St. Clare Garden. Organized and hosted by Sr. Paige Samdal, these gatherings invite community residents and guests to slow down, share stories, and savor the beauty of nature together.

Our first S’mores & More gathering of the season takes place TONIGHT at 6 PM! If the weather does not cooperate, we will still gather at Entrance 5.

Future gathering dates can be found on our website calendar at wheatonfranciscan.org

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing how our community is participating in this global movement—turning hope into action for our planet and future generations.
