Trinity Episcopal Church - Where ALL are welcome.

Love God | Love Neighbor | Change the World

At Trinity Episcopal Church, we all enjoy and benefit from membership in a community of faithful people - faithful to our Lord and to each other. We carry fond memories of Trinity wherever we go: Rich worship experiences; friends who have become part of our extended, caring family; Support in times of personal difficulties; Beautiful little faces in son

g and laughter; Openly sharing our concerns and helping with the needs of others; God responding to our prayers. Trinity is an active church in faith and community where ALL are welcome.

May Saint of the Month: Frances Perkins (1880-1965) was a science teacher who became the longest-serving cabinet member in U.S. history. But she was also a strategic negotiator and visionary policy architect.

Key leadership insights from her life:
• Principled Negotiation: When FDR offered her the Secretary of Labor position, she brought a comprehensive list of demands including Social Security, minimum wage laws, and child labor bans - and got him to agree to all of them
• Faith-Driven Purpose: Her monthly retreats to a convent weren't escape from work but preparation for it: "Christians must regard entrance into politics and political activity as a major basic Christian duty"
• Breaking Barriers Responsibly: She accepted the cabinet position knowing "The door might not be opened to another woman for a long, long time" and had "a kind of duty to other women"
• Holistic Leadership: She understood that effective leadership required both policy expertise and spiritual grounding

Sometimes the most effective leaders are those who see their work as service to something greater than career advancement.

Worship together at Trinity Episcopal in Wheaton: Saturdays at 5pm, Sundays at 8am & 10am and Wednesdays at 10:00am

An excerpt from one of this weekend’s scripture reading: (Acts 2: 1-21) When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Francis Perkins, May Saint of the Month

In 1880, when women had few professional opportunities and worker protections were virtually nonexistent, Frances Perkins chose a path of radical advocacy for the vulnerable. Born to a conservative middle-class family who believed "the poor were largely responsible for their poverty," her worldview shifted dramatically through her work at Hull House and witnessing the Triangle Shirtwaist fire.

What strikes me most about Perkins isn't just her groundbreaking role as the first woman in a presidential cabinet, but her theological integration of faith and politics. She understood that Christian discipleship required engagement with "secular affairs of society that all may be maintained in health and decency."
Her approach to public service was beautifully grounded: "I came to Washington to serve God, FDR, and the millions of plain, common, working men."

In our age of political polarization and economic inequality, Perkins reminds us that faith-based advocacy for justice isn't optional - it's central to Christian calling. Her legacy in Social Security, minimum wage, and workers' rights continues to protect millions today.
