"Sin has colonized our “I”—that transcendental part of our selves—so that “I” become a cooperating partner in my own subjugation. The contradiction runs so deep that our “I” doesn’t even realize it’s been corrupted. Paul, Phoebe, the Romans, and we all meet in the “I” of Roman 7 to say together what we cannot acknowledge by our own power: We are the body of death in the body politic of death. The only way out is deliverance. But thanks be to God through Jesus Christ that we have a deliverer. When the power of Sin is at its most incipient, God the Father sends his Wisdom to make us whole and holy in him."

"Almighty God, who has revealed to your Church your eternal Being of glorious majesty and perfect love as one God in Trinity of Persons: Give us grace that, like your bishop Gregory of Nyssa, we may continue steadfast in the confession of this faith, and constant in our worship of you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. "

"O God, the King of Saints, who strengthened your servants Perpetua, Felicity, and their companions to make a good confession and to encourage one another in the time of trial: Grant that we who cherish their blessed memory may share their pure and steadfast faith, and win with them the palm of victory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen."

"What difference does one life make? What difference does one decision make? What difference does one conversation make? In this present evil age, is there any righteous cause left? Does my lenten fast even matter? Are my prayers working? Are my alms being wasted?

Beloved, as we continue walking this long and winding road of Lent, I have the privilege to declare this good news over us: God calls life out of death and things into existence that do not yet exist."

"Almighty God, who called your servant George Herbert from the pursuit of worldly honors to be a poet and a pastor of souls: Give us grace, we pray, joyfully to dedicate all our powers to your service; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen."

"The good news of Lent is that our vindication comes from the triune God. When we embrace the depths of our depravity and our compete dependence on Christ, transformation can begin. So, as gently as I can manage, I invite you to loosen your grip on being “one of the good ones.” Let go of the notion that you’re not one of them."
