Day 364
Hebrews 6:19 MEV We have this hope as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, which enters the inner sanctuary behind the veil.
“Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,When the clouds unfold their wings of strife? When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain, will your anchor drift or firm remain?” So goes the words of the first verse of the hymn ‘Will Your Anchor Hold’ or ‘We Have An Anchor’ written by Priscilla Jane Owens in 1882, the music was composed by William J. Kirkpatrick. Sir William Alexander Smith founded the Boys' Brigade in Glasgow, Scotland, on October 4, 1883, and shortly thereafter this hymn was adopted as the Boys Brigade hymn as it aligned with the BB (Boys Brigade) motto Sure and Steadfast. The Boys Brigade was (and is) different to the Boy Scouts as it has more of a military leaning. Boys Brigade Companies are usually formed within a local church. Meetings incorporate different programs including the inspection of uniforms worn by the boys and drill, and there are regular Church Parades, during which the BB hymn would invariably be sung.
There is no doubt that we live in a turbulent world characterized by turbulent times, and it seems reasonable that the church should be able to embrace the BB Motto and be sure and steadfast. Yes, we as the church can and must, if our testimony has any validity to it, in this crumbling world culture, for it is very obvious that there is movement towards a one world culture, with globalism alive and well, and fully embracing the political, social and financial disciplines of society.
For we the church there is no fear for we are commanded by the captain of our salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ, and he is well able to keep us in these tumultuous days, and we can stand clothed in the armour of God, sure and steadfast, relying on the hope that is held within the veil, and having faith in a God who cannot lie. We are able, despite the turbulence, to be the ‘more than conquerors’ the scripture declares us to be because we are anchored on the rock of our salvation. Yes, the waves of aggression against the church may pound it with all the forcefulness that evil can muster, but it stands, sure and steadfast, because the gates of hell cannot prevail against it. The hope of God's faithfulness allows the church to withstand the onslaught, and in turn, aggressively proclaim the gospel with success.
For the individual too, the anchor holds in the storms of life, as Satan constantly comes as a thief to steal, kill and destroy, yet the children of God are able to stand in the evil day, by the power of God flowing in and through them. The hope that is the anchor of the soul, gives each Christian the courage to be immovable, watching and waiting on the Lord, until the day they are caught up to be with him forever.
Do you feel you are being tossed ‘to and fro’ in your sphere of life? Throw out your anchor of faith onto the rock of your salvation, and you will surely find that your life is stable in him, and in him your life is sure and steadfast!
