Every time I am in San Diego, I take the short drive to Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. Located at the tip of Point Loma Peninsula nearly 400 feet above the city of San Diego, it provides a breathtaking view of San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It is impossible to ignore the over 120,000 service men and women buried beneath the perfectly aligned, marble grave markers.
I always exit my rental car and stand on the perfectly manicured grounds to give thanks for the freedom that me and my family enjoy due to their immeasurable sacrifice. George S. Patton declared, "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived."
From the battles of Lexington and Concord when the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" was fired from that unknown person, signaling the rebellion against the British to WWI, WW2, The Korean War, and Vietnam, to the recent wars and conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the thirteen U.S. service members recently killed in the initial weeks of the conflict with Iran; we take time this Memorial Day to mourn and remember you!
Many of us who were born in the 40s and 50s can remember our grandfathers, uncles and brothers tell of WWI and WW2. Later generations heard about the horrors of the Korean War. If you are part of Generation X like myself, one of your parents might have fought in Vietnam.
Across our great nation today, Americans take a break from their normal routines to remember the immeasurable sacrifices made for our freedom, our liberty, and our safety.
May we be kind to each other today, thanking God for His mighty hand of protection over our country. May the Lord grant us the privilege and great responsibility of being the city on a hill that continues to lead the world in peace and safety.
May God's face shine brightly upon you this Memorial Day!
