The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people. Founded by Father Michael J. McGivney, the Knights of Columbus was chartered on March 29, 1882 in Connecticut. John Council was chartered as Council 3738 on November 15, 1953. Worldwide, more than 14,000 Councils with a more than 1.8 million members have been chartered. John Council has more than 300 members. The Knights of Columbus offers you social outlets, athletic and recreational programs, community service, involvement with youth and feeling of belonging that new friendships can provide. Active in Church ministries, members are urged to serve as lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, religious education instructors, participants in Parish organizations, and to provide manpower for Church buildings and grounds projects. The Knights of Columbus is one of the nation's oldest service organizations and offers programs for its members and their families. Knights are committed to all areas of Church and social involvement: in vocations, human rights, family life, support for law and order, and opportunities for the disadvantaged, especially those with developmental disabilities in our community. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practical Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who shall not be less than 18 years of age on their last birthday. A practical Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the Precepts of the Church. Application blanks are available from any member of the Knights of Columbus. All are welcome to call the KC hall directly at (630)969-3738, stop by during one of our events, or e-mail one of the other officers. We will be more than happy to assist you.

Our Knights of Columbus Council, St. John #3738 was privileged to be invited to provide an Honor guard for Westmont's 9/11 Memorial Service of the tragedy 25 years ago. We were joined by two from Bishop Fitzgerald Council which brought our number to 8. - Always Remember!
A member from our past Ladies Auxiliary, Sue Senica stated eloquently -
25 years ago. We will never forget. Sadly we will also never be the same. We went to bed 9/10/01 unknowing. Clueless of what was to come. We woke up on a day that would change our country forever. If only this country could heal and unify once again. 9/12/01 is a day we should also remember but so many do not.
God Bless America!

Our Corporate Communion was attended by about 40 Knights & Family members (we were scattered through the Church so I stopped counting at 40 that I could identify). We had an impressive Honor Guard of 8 SKs in Uniform, and I am very happy to say, led by PGK, Commander Dave Ortman as he walked down the aisle with only the use of his walker. A wonderful dinner of pulled pork, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw, sauerkraut, chips, watermelon, brownies & sweet medallions, was prepared by Keith Nega & Tony Pietryla was enjoyed by about 30. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this a success. ~

Our Council is privileged to be part of this year’s joint (knights, Lions, & Rotary) Community initiative, "EmpowerHer", my thanks to Lion Krystal Vaughn for introducing this. It is a mission to collect women's hygiene products, to educate and create awareness for everyone, to create community partnerships and outreach, and instill empowerment, dignity, and confidence to women/girls of all stages of life.

Our long-term vision is to build a network of care throughout our community by placing EmpowerHER Essentials Kits wherever they may be needed most. We hope to partner with police departments, fire departments, EMS agencies, shelters, schools, libraries, hospitals, and other community organizations so that when a girl or woman experiences an unexpected need or difficult moment, someone can hand her an EmpowerHER Essentials Kit that provides comfort, dignity, and essential care.

Our vision is to assemble EmpowerHER Essentials Kits that can be distributed through community partners such as needed by local police and fire departments, EMS agencies, schools, libraries, shelters, churches and outreach programs, the People's Resource Center (PRC), and other organizations that serve girls and women. This can also include HT’s SVDP.

After years of operating PRC’s Food Pantry, I saw this as an unmet need – these items were requested but seldom donated and were unable to be purchased with SNAP benefits. Too often women/girls needs different than men/boys are only whispered, it needs to be spoken.
