Put Yourself Second
I remember when I was a youth in church hearing the acronym for J. O. Y. You may have heard it yourself: JESUS first, OTHERS second, and YOURSELF last. Everyone gets all excited about it because it sounds so spiritual. But, is it Biblical?
First and foremost, we are supposed to put JESUS first. He is our God and we are to serve him wholeheartedly. We are to have no other god before Him.
But, I submit to you that we are not to put OTHERS second, but rather YOURSELF. Yes, we are to prefer our brother above ourselves. Yes, we are to lay our lives down for our friends. But, we cannot do either if our heart is not where it needs to be. The Bible tells us to examine ourselves. See what is in your own heart, not what is in the heart of another. You see, you are not responsible for the thoughts and actions of OTHERS. You are responsible for the thoughts and actions of YOURSELF.
In the spirit realm, this includes not judging others or figuring out what they should do or not do. When you say that someone should do this or that, then you are putting OTHERS above YOURSELF. In some cases you are putting OTHERS above JESUS. You are not responsible for OTHERS. You are responsible for YOURSELF.
Many believers will even take this J. O. Y. acronym and apply it to the physical realm. They will do without things they need so that OTHERS may have. While this is commendable, it is not Biblical. I am not condoning the “us four and no more” mentality. However, I am saying to seek JESUS first and take care of YOURSELF second and then take care of OTHERS last. This way you both prosper.
So, the Biblical way to approach this acronym that religion says that we are to adopt is not J. O. Y., but rather J. Y. O. This is where our true JOY will come from. Remember to always put JESUS first. He is the most important part of everything we do. Then, put YOURSELF second. Doing this allows you to submit to God and keep him as your source of supply. Finally, put OTHERS last. This way the gospel is spread to all those around you. It will spread true JOY everywhere you go. I promise you will not be disappointed and those around you will be blessed!
