🐍 Sssnake sssafety is esssential!

City staff recently spotted this bullsnake hanging around Big Dry Creek near City Park. As the warm weather returns, snakes that live in our open spaces, parks, and trails will become more active.

Bullsnakes are non-venomous and eat rodents, but they look similar to rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes also live in Westminster and prefer to avoid people, but will defend themselves if threatened. Most bites occur when snakes are stepped on, startled, or provoked. Here's some reminders on how to coexist with our slithery neighbors:

• Snakes are most active in the morning and evening and may bask on pavement or warm surfaces.
• Stay alert and keep earbuds out to hear a snake's warning.
• If you see a rattlesnake, give it plenty of room to escape.
• Stay on designated trails and keep dogs on a six‑foot leash.

🚑 Rattlesnake bite first aid for people
• Remain calm; venomous snake bites are seldom fatal if treated properly.
• Call 911 immediately and follow instructions.
• Do not cut the wound or attempt to suck out venom.
• Remove jewelry and monitor swelling.
• Note the time of the bite for responders.
• Do not drive yourself; if help is unreachable, slowly walk out — do not run.

🐶 Pets and rattlesnakes
• If your pet is bitten, transport them to a veterinary hospital right away and call ahead.
• If possible, carry your pet to slow the spread of venom.
• Snake‑avoidance training is available for pets at many local facilities.
