-- Throughout my career in business, one question on the psychological testing, when working for others, that came up in the vetting process was: "From 1-5, with 5 being most agreed with, how true do you think this statement is: 'Most people achieve success because of who they know?"
For this question, companies aren't looking for you to agree with this question. The top 3 reasons are because someone that highly agrees with this: 1) may cause discord amongst peers because of this perspective; 2) may demonstrate characteristics leaning towards being a gossip, which can create an unpleasant work environment for others; and, 3) may compromise morals to achieve success.
In our society, many of those, who fit in with the in-crowd of those who harm others with the power they hold, have had this question come up, and have answered this question deceitfully because they are aware of what the company is looking for. In doing this, where their answer was a 1, their hired-in behavior was better aligned with it being a 5. In this, they promulgated the clique behavior, which highlights an environment closely tied to highschool popularity contests. As adults, they never grew up, and in their path, they left/leave a path of destruction. The in-crowd would rather you bend to them and exclude those that really matter.
Through my life, I've always been one to buck the "status quo," and have been highly successful and fulfilled because of it. Clique-ish behavior brings forth a compromising of character, a compromising of integrity, and harm to people and business. While it is easier to stand with the in-crowd, it is only short-term and short-lived. In the end, it benefits no one. It's a delay of real progress, and sadly, many people, through this, think that it is wiser to disassociate with people because they either oppose the in-crowd, cause issues for the in-crowd, and/or refuse to succumb to the perceived power of the in-crowd.
Through my life, I've found it more fulfilling to do what's right, stand with those who are being harmed by the destructive actions of the in-crowd, and to not be moved by the tactics of the in-crowd to attempt to get one to submit. They don't like people who they can't control, who aren't bothered by them, and those aligned can't understand why you won't join them. Well, character and people matter more than wading in a pit of bile.
Moral of this post: "Do what is just and right. Free those from the power of their oppressors, these oppressors who have the pattern of robbing them, and protect the vulnerable." ~Jeremiah 22:3
Be free. Live a fruitful and bountiful life. And, enjoy a life of satisfaction and fulfillment. Life is much better that way!
