Today we honor Indigenous peoples and the rich cultures, histories, and traditions that continue to shape communities today.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a reminder to listen, learn, and recognize Indigenous voices and experiences.

Near the end of her life, one of my aunts was at a dinner table at the home of friends. During the dinner, she asked a pastor who was at the table, “What do you think heaven is like?” The pastor paused, looked around the table, and said, “I think it’s a lot like this, only with more people.” I love how a table invites us to know this, and how it calls us into a life that is not just for “someday” but is present here and now.

This Sunday is World Communion Sunday. In celebration and in hope, this blessing is for you. Every day.

AND THE TABLE WILL BE WIDE

And the table
will be wide.
And the welcome
will be wide.
And the arms
will open wide
to gather us in.
And our hearts
will open wide
to receive.

And we will come
as children who trust
there is enough.
And we will come
unhindered and free.
And our aching
will be met
with bread.
And our sorrow
will be met
with w**e.

And we will open our hands
to the feast
without shame.
And we will turn
toward each other
without fear.
And we will give up
our appetite
for despair.
And we will taste
and know
of delight.

And we will become bread
for a hungering world.
And we will become drink
for those who thirst.
And the blessed
will become the blessing.
And everywhere
will be the feast.

God of hope and presence, we remember.

On this day of solemn remembrance:
May we honor the lives that were lost in this tragic act.
May we give thanks for those who served and saved, rendered aid and assistance.
May we give comfort to those who live with loss.
May we seek justice and peace where it is within our ability,
and rely on you when the ability escapes us.
On this day of solemn remembrance:
May we build what has been torn down.
May we mend what has been broken.
May live your love when hate seems to reign.
May we bear witness to the cause of peace.
Amen.

Thanks for your efforts, Beach UMC!

We hosted our 5th annual Back-to-School Bash! Helping our kids prepare for the new school year was so much fun!

We distributed backpacks in partnership with Supplies for Success, had a delicious breakfast, played games, did crafts, and gave back-to-school haircuts. Thank you to Tiana and Christine of the Tiana Rose Salon and Sam Leonardi for generously donating their time to give the kids haircuts. Students were also given toiletries, extra school supplies, and books provided to us by Rogers Memorial Library.

A big shoutout to the First Presbyterian Church in Southampton for hosting us and collecting backpacks and extra school supplies. Thank you also to Beach United Methodist Church of Westhampton Beach, Quogue Field Club's Teen Program, Marci Schoenbach, and The Children's School for collecting backpacks, lunchboxes, and school supplies for us to share. A special thank you to our loving volunteers for their help in making it a wonderful day.

So far, we have given 434 backpacks loaded with supplies. In the coming weeks, we will keep distributing everything kids need for a great start to the new school year. Teachers, counselors, and coaches know they can turn to us to provide new shoes, clothing, equipment for extracurriculars, scholarships for special programs, or anything else students need to thrive.
