⛪ The Meaning Behind the Paintings in Our Sanctuary
Have you ever noticed these two beautiful paintings hanging in the sanctuary at Faith Beyond Madison and wondered what all of the symbols mean?
These paintings have been part of our church for many years, and at one time a minister explained their Christian symbolism to our youth. While we may not remember his exact words, the symbols themselves tell a beautiful story of our faith. ❤️
🕊️ BAPTISM & THE HOLY SPIRIT
The painting featuring the descending dove points us toward Baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The dove is a familiar symbol of the Holy Spirit, reminding us of Jesus’ baptism when the Spirit of God descended like a dove.
The drops of water remind us of the waters of Baptism—cleansing, forgiveness, new birth and new life in Christ.
Together, these images remind us that God’s grace comes to us, claims us as His own and gives us new life through water and the Spirit.
🍇🌾 HOLY COMMUNION
The second painting points us toward Holy Communion and Christ’s sacrifice for us.
The wheat represents the bread—the body of Christ.
The grapes represent the wine—the blood of Christ.
The chalice represents the cup shared at the Lord’s Table.
And the letters IHS are an ancient Christian symbol for the name of Jesus.
Together, these symbols remind us of Jesus’ words at the Last Supper and of the grace, forgiveness and spiritual nourishment we receive when we gather at His table.
💜 Together, these two paintings tell such a beautiful story.
Baptism reminds us that we belong to Christ.
Communion reminds us that Christ continues to nourish and sustain us.
They are more than decorations on the walls of our sanctuary. They are visual reminders of God’s grace, Christ’s sacrifice, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the faith that has been passed down from generation to generation.
The next time you’re sitting in our sanctuary, take a moment to look at them a little more closely. Sometimes the things we’ve walked past for years have a beautiful story to tell. ✝️
