Daniel was a Jewish prophet who lived in Babylon, the center of empire in the 6th century BC. When none of his advisors could interpret the king’s dream, the regent asked Daniel what the God of Israel intended by this vision of a multilayered statue being obliterated by a rock, that then grew into an enormous mountain.

The answer? God’s kingdom overcoming all the kingdoms of the world. Daniel explained that each layer of the statue represented a nation: the Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and Romans, followed by the many mixed weak and strong countries of the world as we see today.

But the stone destroyed all of these kingdoms. Daniel explained the stone’s destruction of the statue this way: “the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever” (Dan. 2:44).

With so much political turmoil (in this nation and beyond) it is wise to remember that Jesus is the believer’s only true commander-in-chief, and he has called us to follow him alone, and to expect his return. If Daniel had the foreknowledge to predict Greece, Persia and Rome rising after his own time, surely he accurately foretells the time when all people of this earth become subject to God’s kingdom.

Jesus is coming soon. The question each of us must answer is this: are you ready for the kingdom of God?

“The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” (Rev. 11:15).
