Relationships would be easy if it weren’t for people.

My dog Duke taught me that lesson when I was 12 years old. Duke seemed convinced that I was perfect, and I felt the same about him. He never wronged me. He never mistreated me. He never even hurt my feelings unless you count the day he died.

But the relationships I have with people are a lot harder. Before long, mistakes are made, and feelings get hurt. No matter how the relationship starts, it always comes down to a question – do I value this relationship enough to reconcile?

Reconciliation isn’t free. It usually costs some pride. Often it requires a few bites of humble pie. But sometimes it costs much more.

Each and every one of us have sinned against God. And as a result, we damaged the most important relationship we’re ever going to have. Lucky for us He valued our relationship too much to leave things the way they were. He sent Jesus to pay the debt – to die the death we deserved so that we could have life in a right relationship with our Heavenly Father. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Now we can get in on the act. You and I are Christ’s ambassadors. We have been given this wonderful message of reconciliation. The good news that, “God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them.” (2 Corinthians 5:19)

Let’s not keep this message to ourselves. Let’s value our neighbors enough to share what God has done for us and pray that God would do the same for them. Our relationships with the people in this life may never be easy or perfect, but, thanks to Jesus, this life is only the beginning.
