Every human life possesses an inherent dignity that remains unchanged, even in suffering, illness, or dependency. This week, we pray for the elderly, the sick, and those nearing the end of life, that they may be surrounded by love, compassionate care, and hope, and that we may always recognize the dignity of every person from conception until natural death. Mary, Mother of Sorrows, pray for us.

Today is the feast day of St. Pope John Paul II.
⁣
While in college, Karol Wojtyla gravitated towards a calling to the priesthood after meetings with his spiritual director. Reflecting on St. John of the Cross and his mysticism helped transformed his spiritual life.
⁣
Wojtyla was ordained in 1946 and in 1958 became Poland’s youngest bishop. He attended the Second Vatican Council in 1962. Because of his wisdom and insight, he was named a cardinal by Pope VI in 1967.
⁣
Cardinal Wojtyla was elected pope in 1978 taking the name John Paul II after the brief papacy of Pope John Paul I. John Paul II had a missionary heart and traveled the world to preach the Gospel. He also loved young people and established World Youth Day. His Wednesday audiences from 1979 until 1984 became the basis for his major written work, Theology of the Body.
⁣
Pope John Paul II died in 2005. He was canonized by Pope Francis on April 27, 2014, and is the patron of World Youth Day, young Catholics, families, and Poland.

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. During this month, we honor Mary as our Blessed Mother and the gift of the rosary to the Church.
⁣
While its roots can be found in the 3rd and 4th century, tradition notes that St. Dominic had a vision of Mary who asked him to promote the use of the rosary as a means to combat heresies. In the 1400s, the rosary evolved with the addition of the Joyful, Glorious, and Sorrowful Mysteries as a means of focused reflection and meditation while praying each decade. In 2002, St. Pope John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries.

Blessed Fulton J. Sheen, pray for us!
⁣
O God, who called the Bishop Blessed Fulton Sheen to preach the Gospel to the whole world, grant, we pray, that by following his example of prayer and devotion to the Mother of your Son, we may also be loyal sons and daughters of your Church by bearing witness to the faith.
⁣
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Today we remember the North American Martyrs, men who gave their lives to bring the Gospel to others.
And missionaries are still doing the same today.
So today, let's pray for the people who have left behind the familiar to share Christ: for missionaries around the world, for their safety, their courage, their communities, and the people they serve.
The Gospel still needs people willing to go. And it still needs people willing to pray. 🌎🙏
Sts. Isaac Jogues, Jean de Brébeuf, and companions, pray for us!

Today is the feast day of St. Ignatius of Antioch.
⁣
Ignatius was born a pagan around 30 AD and converted to Christianity as an adult thanks to the Apostle John. He became the third bishop of Antioch during the time of Roman Emperor Trajen, who persecuted Christians.
⁣
Ignatius is most known for his seven epistles to the early Church communities which he wrote on his way to be martyred in Rome. In his letters, he pleaded that the Church let him die and that the communities should keep themselves from heresy.
⁣
Ignatius was attacked by lions in Circus Maximus in 107 AD. He is the patron of the Church in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Today is the feast day of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun and mystic.
⁣
At 9 years old, she became ill and bed-ridden for four years. Only after she promised to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she would dedicate herself to religious life was she miraculously healed. Thanking Mary for her help, she added the name Mary to her name.
⁣
Margaret entered the convent at the age of 24 and became a nun. It was during this time she received visions and revelations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and instructions for the First Friday devotion.
⁣
To practice this devotion, one must: attend Mass and receive communion on the First Friday of 9 consecutive months (going to confession beforehand if needed), practice acts of reparation – offering prayers to make up for our sins and the sins of others.
⁣
Many questioned the authenticity of her visions, and it wasn’t until 75 years after her death that the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus became recognized by the Church.
⁣
Margaret is the patron of devotees of the Sacred Heart.
⁣
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, pray for us!
