We had a new type of scam present itself last night, and it’s something that is cunning and planned out and just plain awful.

We received a request for a welfare check on a woman whom the caller identified as her grandmother who was about to be scammed out of some money. The caller had a heightened sense of urgency in reporting this and we quickly dispatched officers to the location the caller identified.

Meanwhile, the woman we were supposed to be checking on was receiving a different phone call, saying that she owed this much money and she needed to pay because the cops were on their way to her house at that moment.

The grandmother was naturally spooked by these sudden threats, which were intensified by looking out the window and actually seeing police heading her way.
She paid the caller. She was scammed out of thousands of dollars.

Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative (HOEC) is seeking a highly organized and motivated individual with proven skills to work on a full-time basis in our accounts receivable department. Preference given to candidates who have previous experience

Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
• Efficiently operate a computer
• Ability to adapt to change and become proficient quickly
• Ability to communicate with a diverse group of members via telephone and face- to-face
• Receiving and entering member utility payments
• Balancing daily transactions

Supplemental training will be provided to successful candidate.

Wednesday, September 2, 2026 - Due to the continued extreme high temperatures, Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative is entering a 𝙋𝙀𝘼𝙆 𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝙏 period. Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative is asking members to alternate the use of major appliances, including washers, dryers, dishwashers, ovens and stoves from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. You can also reduce energy consumption by unplugging unused chargers and appliances such as cell phone charges, tablet chargers and small kitchen appliances. Consider turning your thermostat up a few degrees as well. If a peak electrical demand is reached it could cost the cooperative and members hundreds of thousands of dollars in future years.
