Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception Making God's Compassionate Presence Known!

Our reading today is the story of Ahab from 1 Kings 21. It is not an easy story to understand or experience the love of God. However, it is a reminder to me to let God be the center of my life at all times. I offer this short prayer for this day:
Creator God, Teach me to see your presence in my daily living.
May I let you be the light that guides me and the air that sustains
me.
Remind me that I am your gift to all of creation and may I live as
that gift everyday.
May I never be separated from you. Amen.

Today is the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, a time to reflect in gratitude on the unfathomable love Jesus has for us. We are called to express that same love to him and to others. Jesus also reminds us today, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." Share your burdens and troubles today with Jesus and live in his love!

Yesterday, we celebrated commitment, dedication, and perseverance. Sister Alice Marie celebrated 70 years of religious profession in our congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception. She and others who commit themselves to God or to a spouse or to a cause over many years are shining examples to me and motivations to continue my life of dedication. May God bless and strengthen them!

Today's reading from St. Peter 4:7-13 is a great reflection for me in many ways. "Let your love for one another be intense, ... Be hospitable to one another without complaining." Today, I am called again to love, to be kind, and to be grateful! I need to especially focus on that last attribute. I can so easily slip into complaining about the least irritation. May my gratitude overcome that inclination today -- and each day!

This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. One of the prayers to the Holy Spirit that we sisters say together each evening was composed by Bishop Edward O'Rourke: "O Holy Spirit, You are my God dwelling within me. Lovingly, humbly, I listen to Your gentle voice and respond to Your promptings. Remake me, I pray, according to the life and example of Christ Jesus. Unite me ever more perfectly with Him and his holy Church. Help me overcome the tendencies of the flesh. Make me responsive to the lordship of Jesus and sustain me as I strive to build up His kingdom..." Come, Holy Spirit!

Today is the memorial of St. Isidore, a farmer canonized in 1622. Isidore was a simple man who faithfully worked the fields, praying continuously and sharing generously with the poor. As the daughter and sister of farmers, I turn to Isidore as a model of simple, prayerful living and relying on God's providence. I also pray for all those who till the soil for a living. St. Isidore, pray for us!

This Sunday, we celebrate Mother's Day, honoring and remembering all the women in our lives who have been "mother" to us. Today's Gospel from John 15:12-17 reminds us to love one another -- a timely reflection on a mother's love. I thank God for my mother and all of those women who have mothered me throughout my life, revealing God's love for me through their words and actions. May Mary, Mother of God, pray for them!

In today's reading from the Acts of the Apostles we hear about the first big controversy in the Church - which resulted in the first major Counsel - the Counsel of Jerusalem. Some wanted one way and others wanted an opposite way. Their path forward - as always - is to pray and discern not what I want but what the Holy Spirit (who actually guides the Church) wants for us and for the Life of the Church. This works not only for matters of Church importance but in our personal lives as well. When I set aside my wants and ask what Holy Spirit wants, I'm always happier. How about you?

Jesus tells us in the gospel of John: "Whoever loves me will keep my word."
This message from Jesus speaks to me of commitment to Jesus who teaches me to love because he is love. It is an invitation for me to ponder how I am loving to others, to myself, and to my faithful commitment to Jesus.
As you journey through this day, give yourself an opportunity to ponder how Jesus words resonate in your heart?

Today is the memorial of St. Joseph the Worker, an appropriate time to remember all workers and those who are seeking work, those who long to use their skills and talents in the best way to serve the needs of others. I pray especially for those who serve in dangerous jobs, who risk their lives for the safety of others. I also pray that I may use my skills and talents as God has intended, so that I may serve others compassionately and lovingly.
