Today is the memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary. As I remember how lovingly my own mother responded to me and my requests for help, I realize how blessed I am to have Mary to intercede for me with her son. How fortunate I am that the Church reminds us of Mary’s presence in our lives. Holy Mary, pray for us!

I discovered this prayer this morning, composed by Fr. Mychal Judge, the first fatality of 9/11: "Lord, take me where you want me to go; let me meet who you want me to meet; tell me what you want me to say, and keep me out of your way." Beautiful position to place myself, directed and guided by Jesus, fully open to Him! May I have this attitude today!

"God of might, giver of every good gift, put into our hearts the love of your name, so that, by deepening our sense of reverence, you may nurture in us what is good and, by your watchful care, keep safe what you have nurtured." This prayer was taken from today's mass collect. I share with and bring to your attention the God of love and care for his people. God calls upon us, desiring our hearts, our minds, our whole beings so he may assure us of his providential care. How might this prayer speak to you today?

Today is the memorial of St. Augustine, bishop and doctor of the Church, who drifted from his Catholic faith but eventually returned through the constant prayers of his mother, St. Monica, and with the guidance of St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan. St. Augustine prayed, "Almighty God, in whom we live and move and have our being, You have made us for Yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in You; grant us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing Your will, no weakness from doing it; but that in Your light we may see light clearly, and in Your service find our perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen." May we be pure of heart and strong in purpose today -- and each day. St. Augustine, pray for us!

"Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious splendor of your Kingdom." This the the psalm refrain for todays readings. We celebrate the feast of St. Bartholomew who was one of the Lord's twelve apostles. He, as well as all the apostles certainly made known the glorious splendor of God's kingdom as they journeyed and proclaimed the Word of God. We, too, through our baptism, have the privilege of spreading the gospel to others. Let us praise and thank our God for the gift of faith.

Today is the memorial of Pope St. Pius X (1835-1914) who is remembered for his encouragement of the frequent reception of Holy Communion. As I received the Eucharist today, I thanked God for Pope Pius X whose devotion to the Eucharist has touched my life all of these years later. I can so often take the sacraments for granted. Today is a reminder of my need for and appreciation of the graces God provides to me. Pope St. Pius, pray for us!

I find myself often these days praying for peace in my heart and throughout the world. The prayer of Zechariah at morning liturgy of the hours especially struck me today: "In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide out feet into the way of peace." May God guide us today to offer compassion, acceptance, and respect to all we meet enabling us to walk with peace of heart and to share that peace with others.

Today is the feast of St. Maximillian Kolbe, a Franciscan priest-martyr, who volunteered to take the place of a fellow prisoner at Auschwitz who was facing death. St. Maximillian's sacrifice has brought me to reflect on how and when I practice "sacrifice" in my life. I will never be a martyr but I really wonder how often I say "no" to myself and choose to do what is uncomfortable, inconvenient, or possibly a bit painful for the good of another. ST. Maximillian, pray for us!

Tomorrow is the feast day of St. Dominic, founder of the Dominican order and friend of St. Francis, our founder. The Dominican sisters have been our friends for years so they are in our special daily prayers. This occasion reminds me of the pricelessness of my friends who have supported me in life, especially in my faith life. I pray for them today and thank God for them. What friends will you pray for today?

Today we remember St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits and publisher of his Spiritual Exercises, designed to practice discernment of God's presence in one's life. Ignatius guides us to discern how God is present in all things, all people and all moments --including within myself and my emotions and desires. May Ignatius intercede for us to help us be more aware of God's presence and God's will in our lives. St. Ignatius, pray for us!
