Friday Bible Meditation - Deuteronomy 24:14-21

Yes, we are each called to work as we are capable and not become an idle burden on others. At the same time, we are called to help those in need. When I read verses 19-21, I think of grocery stores or restaurants that would rather throw out the food they did not manage to sell by the end of the day rather than donate it. Do we often become so concerned with how much we could earn that we forget our duty to the stranger, orphan, and widow?

Monday Bible Meditation - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

I was holding my mother’s hand when she passed away; I was just 18 years old. The pain was profound, and it took me over a year to understand what it means to not grieve as those without hope. We are assured that those who have died in Him will rise again. My grief is tempered by the knowledge that I will see my mother again, along with a host of family and friends who have gone on before! We have a charge to actively share our faith and authentically live Christ’s teachings. Let’s help those we cherish embrace the promise of eternal life.

Monday Bible Meditation - Exodus 36:2-7

Can you imagine your church treasurer standing up at a meeting and saying, “Please stop giving, we have too much”? This is what with the Israelites in their giving toward the Tabernacle project. They were not forced or guilted into it; Moses did not have to set up auto-draft out of their accounts. They were moved in their hearts and “brought a voluntary offering” (35:29). They brought so much that they had to be “restrained from bringing any more” (v.6). The people’s hearts were open to generous giving as moved by the Lord. They were passionate about the project they were working on together. I think we can learn much about giving from the Israelites here.
