SAY CHEESE(CAKE) FOR SHAVUOT!

Shavuot begins tonight — the holiday celebrating the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. One beloved tradition? Eating dairy foods like cheesecake.

Why dairy? According to tradition, when the Torah was given on a Sabbath, the Israelites could no longer eat their non-kosher meat or prepare new meat that day — so they ate dairy instead. Over time, cheesecake became a Shavuot favorite, symbolizing the Torah as “milk and honey.”

Fun fact: The iconic Sara Lee cheesecake was created in the 1940s by Jewish Chicago baker Charles Lubin, who named it after his daughter. Sweet tradition meets sweet dessert.

A Message from Rabbi Alan Bell:
CHAG SAMEACH FROM TEMPLE BETH EL!

This Thursday evening and continuing through Friday and Shabbat, we celebrate the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot is one of the major festivals of the year in the Jewish calendar. Along with Passover and Sukkot, Shavuot is one of the pilgrimage festivals. When the Temples in Jerusalem stood, Jews would travel to the holy city and the Beit HaMikdash to offer sacrifices on the altar for the holiday. The word Shavuot means weeks. The Torah commands us to count seven weeks, forty-nine days, from Passover, and on the fiftieth day we celebrate Shavuot. Most importantly, Shavuot is the day we commemorate the receiving of the Ten Commandments and the Torah from God. Not only was this a renewal of God’s covenant with the Jewish people, but our Rabbis describe this time as the wedding between God and his people.

What an unforgettable evening at Chapel Grooves: Jazz After Dark! 🎷✨

More than 50 guests packed Yeckes Chapel as the incredible musicians of Blues Equation took us on a musical journey through jazz classics, fusion and reggae rhythms that had people dancing in the aisles and rising to their feet in applause.
A special thank you to Tom Regis, whose masterful commentary brought the music even more deeply to life. From sharing the stories behind the selections – including some of his own original compositions – to exploring the spiritual roots and origins of jazz, Tom created an experience that was as inspiring as it was entertaining.
Historic space. Soulful music. Joyful community. A truly magical night at Beth El. ❤️🎶

Some journeys take time.
For Steve Yeckes, it was a path that led away—and then back again.

Back to tradition.
Back to community.
Back to the Haftarah.

For more than three decades, Steve has served as gabbai at Temple Beth El, helping others find their place in the service.
Now, through the Haftarot Scroll Project, he is honoring that journey in a lasting way.

“Reading the Haftarah is an honor for me.”

As we approach the final opportunities to participate, we invite you to consider your own story.
