They came because of the many economic opportunities available as a result of Mr. Henry M. Flagler's endeavors. The construction of the Florida East Coast Railroad, Royal Poinciana Hotel and the Breakers Hotel created a demand for a very large labor force. Living in Palm Beach in an unplanned community called "The Styx", the Anglicans worshipped from 1900-1910 at Bethesda-By-The -Sea Episcopal Church. At a point in time, the Anglicans were forced to relocate from Palm Beach to West Palm Beach. In need of a place to worship, they banded together and began having Sunday School on the porch of Mr Mansell's home located on 4th Street near Sapodilla Avenue. The Sunday School lasted for two months. Mr and Mrs Ben Taylor worked unceasingly with the Diocese of South Florida negotiating to have a church built. Through faith, dedication, and perseverance, the Anglicans' dream finally became a reality . On March 13,1913 , a group of members met with the late Reverend William Cane Gray, Bishop of The Diocese of South Florida. From this humble beginning, St Patrick's Episcopal Church was born. The Founders, who purchased a plot of land for $200 at Fourth Street and Sapodilla Avenue were extraordinarily appreciative of George W. Cluett, philanthropist and member of Bethesda- By-The-Sea Episcopal Church for providing all funds needed to build and furnish the church. Mr and Mrs Ben Taylor named the church St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in honor of the great Saint Patrick of Ireland and St Patrick's Anglican Church in the Bahamas. Spiritual Leadership.
