Saint Ephrem, Doctor of the Church
Today, June 9, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Ephrem (306-373), deacon and Doctor of the Church. Saint Ephrem, originally from Syria, wrote extensively in his native Syriac, close to the Aramaic language spoken by Christ. He penned an extensive collection of hymns, and is widely thought to be responsible for the practice of hymn-singing during the celebration of Mass. Saint Ephrem was a tireless defender of the faith, countering heresy with logic and faith. Many of his writings remain today, inspiring the modern-day faithful to reflection and commentary on the Passion of Christ, Our Blessed Mother, and other significant tenets of our faith.
Saint Ephrem was born in Nisibis, Mesopotamia, possibly the son of Christian parents. Whether he was born into the Christian faith, or converted early in life is unclear, although the former seems more likely given his testimony: "I was born in the way of truth. Although my boyhood did not understand the greatness of it, I knew it when trial came." Saint Ephrem was baptized at the age of eighteen and became a disciple of the famous bishop of Nisibis, Saint Jacob, with whom he accompanied to important doctrinal councils and meetings, including the Council of Nicaea.
Ephrem, recognized for his great knowledge and wisdom, and thoughtful consideration of Church doctrine and Holy Scripture, was appointed dean of the Nisibis school of theology. He worked closely with, and served as counsel, to three bishops, remaining in Nisibis until the occupation of the town by Persians in 363. At that point, he fled the city, taking up residence in a secluded cave close to the city of Edessa. There, Saint Ephrem continued his writing, embracing an austere life of fasting, prayer, and self-denial. Edessa, He subsisted on a little barley bread and a few vegetables each day, focusing on his writing. He is described, during this time period as โ€œsmall in stature, bald, beardless, and with skin shriveled and dried up like a potsherd. His gown was all patches and the color of dirt. He is said to have wept much and never laughed.โ€
Saint Ephrem wrote countless homilies, sermons, commentaries on Scripture, and hymns. He confronted heresy throughout the Church, and his writings were quickly translated into every possible language of the day, spreading throughout the East and West, and greatly influencing Church doctrine and tradition. Saint Ephrem staunchly defended the singularity of Christโ€”the Divine and human perfectly united. He wrote on many topics, such as the love of God, morals, the Incarnation, the Eucharist, and original sin. His works were described as "a storehouse of treasures," and he was called -- "Harp of the Holy Spirit," "Doctor of the world," and "Pillar of the Church."
Saint Ephrem was raised to a deacon by Saint Basil near the end of his life. Such was his humility, however, he refused ordination to the priesthood, and felt unworthy to lead a congregation. Instead, he continued to preach and write from the vantage of his austere focus on the Lord.
Saint Ephrem wrote prolifically about Mary, Our Blessed Mother. He called devotion to her "the unlocking of the gates of the heavenly Jerusalem,โ€ and wrote specifically of her perpetual virginity, her role as Theotokos (Mother of God), as her status as the first and perfect disciple, and of her many virtues given to her by Christ. Saint Ephrem wrote: "Thou and Thy Mother are the only ones who are in every way perfectly beautiful, for in Thee, O Lord, there is no stain; no stain also in Thy Mother."

The writings of Saint Ephrem speak volumes about his passion for the truth of the Gospel, and his zeal for spreading the Word of God. We are blessed to have poems, hymns, prayers, and writings today, penned centuries ago, reminding us not only of the constancy of the love of the Lord, but of the long-standing traditions and teachings of the Church. As we read the writings of Saint Ephrem, we pray for his zeal for the Lord, and the future of His Church on earth.
Before his death, Saint Ephrem reflected on his life, writing in his testament: "There grew a vine-shoot on my tongue: and increased and reached unto heaven, And it yielded fruit without measure: leaves likewise without number. It spread, it stretched wide, it bore fruit: all creation drew near, And the more they were that gathered: the more its clusters abounded. These clusters were the Homilies; and these leaves the Hymns. God was the giver of them: glory to Him for His grace! For He gave to me of His good pleasure: from the storehouse of His treasures."

Prayer of Saint Ephrem
O Lord and Master of my life, keep from me the spirit of indifference and discouragement, lust of power and idle chatter. Instead, grant to me, Your servant, the spirit of wholeness of being, humble-mindedness, patience, and love. O Lord and King, grant me the grace to be aware of my sins and not to judge my brother; for You are blessed now and ever and forever. Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Mother
O Virgin, most pure, wholly unspotted, O Mary, Mother of God, Queen of the universe, you are above all the saints, the hope of the elect and the joy of all the blessed. It is you who have reconciled us with God.
You are the only refuge of sinners and the safe harbor of those who are shipwrecked. You are the consolation of the world, the ransom of captives, the health of the weak, the joy of the afflicted, and the salvation of all. We have recourse to you, and we beseech you to have pity on us. Amen!

The Catholic Church teaches that during the Holy Mass, when the priest speaks the words of consecration given by Jesus at the Last Supper, the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ.
This change is called ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐ฎ๐›๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง. The appearance of bread and wine remains the same, they still look, taste, and feel like bread and wine, but their substance is completely changed. What is truly present is Jesus Christ Himself: His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.
This is not a symbol. It is the Real Presence of Christ. Jesus said, โ€œThis is my bodyโ€ and โ€œThis is my bloodโ€ (Matthew 26:26-28). The Church has believed these words literally since the time of the Apostles.
The word ๐™๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ช๐™—๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ was solemnly affirmed by the Church and clearly explained at the Fourth Lateran Council (1215) and later at the Council of Trent. It protects the truth that, after the consecration, Christ becomes truly present in the Eucharist.
That is why Catholics kneel before the Blessed Sacrament, adore the Eucharist, and receive Holy Communion with reverence. We are not receiving ordinary bread. We are receiving Jesus Himself, who comes to nourish us with His divine life.
Let us remember: what appears to be bread is no longer bread. By the power of God, it has become the living Christ, hidden under the sacramental signs of bread and wine.

HAVE A BLESSED CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY!

Today, we celebrate Corpus Christi, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. This feast reminds us that Jesus remains truly present with us in the Holy Eucharist, giving Himself as food for our souls.

At every Mass, we do not simply remember Jesus; we encounter Him. In the Eucharist, He strengthens the weak, comforts the sorrowful, and fills our hearts with grace, peace, and hope.

Corpus Christi invites us to love the Blessed Sacrament more deeply and to live as Christโ€™s presence in the world through charity, mercy, and compassion.

Lord Jesus, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, increase our faith and deepen our love.

Happy and Blessed Corpus Christi Sunday!

The Sacrifice of the Mass: The Highest Form of Prayer

Why Catholics Call the Mass the Supreme Act of Worship

The Church teaches that the Holy Mass is the highest and greatest form of prayer.

The Mass is not merely a prayer service. Rather it is the fulfillment of Christ's command: Luke 22:19

"Do this in remembrance of me." โ€ผ

The word "remembrance" (anamnesis) in biblical worship means more than recalling a past eventโ€”it means making present God's saving action.

The reality is that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is something infinitely greater than all of our own pious prayers as it is not merely our prayer offered to Godโ€”it is the prayer and sacrifice of Jesus Christ Himself offered to the Father !

1. The Mass Is the Sacrifice of Christ Made Present

At Mass, we do not simply remember Calvary.

Through the mystery of the Eucharist, the one sacrifice of Christ on the Cross is made sacramentally present.

As the Church teaches, the sacrifice of the Cross and the sacrifice of the Mass are one and the same sacrifice.

๐Ÿ“– Hebrews 9:28

โ—"Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many."

โ—At every Mass, the Church is united to that eternal offering of Christ.

โ—No personal prayer can equal the value of Christ's perfect self-offering to the Father.

2๏ธโƒฃ The Principal One Praying Is Jesus Himself

When we pray the Rosary, we pray.

When we pray a novena, we pray.

When we pray privately, we pray.

โœ๏ธ But at Mass, Jesus prays and offers Himself through His Church.

The priest acts in persona Christi ("in the person of Christ").

๐Ÿ“– Hebrews 7:25

"He always lives to make intercession for them."

The Mass is therefore the prayer of Christ the Eternal High Priest.

3๏ธโƒฃ The Mass Gives Perfect Worship to God

Every human prayer is limited because we are finite creatures.

But Jesus offers the Father perfect adoration, perfect thanksgiving, perfect reparation, and perfect petition.

This is why the Mass is the supreme act of worship.

The Church traditionally teaches that the Mass perfectly fulfills the four ends of prayer:

๐Ÿ™ Adoration
๐Ÿ™ Thanksgiving
๐Ÿ™ Atonement
๐Ÿ™ Petition

4๏ธโƒฃ Heaven and Earth Unite at the Mass

The Mass is not merely a gathering of believers.

It is participation in the heavenly liturgy.

๐Ÿ“– Apocalypse 5:8-14 describes the worship of heaven before the throne of God.

At every Mass, we join:

๐Ÿ‘ผ The angels
๐Ÿ‘‘ The saints
โœ๏ธ The Church on earth

This is why we proclaim:

"Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts..."

The same hymn sung before God's throne in heaven.

๐ŸŒน Then What About the Rosary, Novenas, and Personal Prayer?

These are not competitors to the Mass.

They are meant to lead us deeper into it.

Think of it this way:

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Personal Prayer = a beautiful candle

๐ŸŒน The Rosary = a garden of spiritual roses

๐Ÿ™ Novenas = persistent petitions

โœ๏ธ The Holy Mass = the Sun itself

Meaning:

The Mass is the center, source, and heart of Catholic worship, and everything else shines because of it.

All Catholic devotions draw their power from Christ, and Christ is most fully present in the Eucharistic sacrifice.

This is why saints who loved the Rosary deeplyโ€”such as Padre Pio and Louis de Montfortโ€”also centered their lives on the Holy Mass.

The Mass is the New Covenant sacrifice foretold in Scripture and celebrated by the Church from the earliest Christian centuries.
