From the Vermont Conference of UCC
Faith should be a tool for love, not exclusion.
Recently, Proposal 4 (the Equal Protection of Law Amendment) passed the Vermont Legislature with a strong majority. This amendment simply guarantees that no Vermonter can be denied equal protection under the law based on race, s*x, religion, disability, s*xual orientation, or gender identity.
Disappointingly, a minority of lawmakers voted against it—and at least one voice even used their interpretation of the Bible to justify denying these human rights.
As the Justice and Witness Ministries Committee of the Vermont Conference UCC, we strongly disagree. We believe the biblical mandate is clear: all people are created by a loving God and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
We are finalizing a public letter in response to these actions and inviting our wider community to stand with us.
