We had our Singing last night. We all enjoyed it. And the food was very good, of course. Prayer requests: Buddy and Sis; Diane’s niece Jenna who is 40 and has been diagnosed with a brain tumor; Tony’s niece Ashley has been placed on hospice. Today’s message: It’s About Building Something New
After the trouble in Selma, Alabama there were meetings and discussions centered around the question: What is it going to take for us to get along? The problem of building community is not unique to Selma or any other city. It was also a problem in the New Testament church. The question is the same: How can we all get along? The problem Paul faced was between Jews and Gentiles. Different groups but the identical problem. How do we all get along? Paul was dealing with this conflict between Jews and Gentiles. But now, by the blood of Jesus Christ, they were called to live under the same roof. They were brought into family. They had all now become part of the household of faith. But becoming part of the household didn’t change their history or their background: it didn’t change where they came from. They were still who they were. Galatians 2, Peter had been spending time with some Gentiles he had converted to become Christians. Some of Peter’s crowd showed up and pressured him into backing away from the Gentiles. They told Peter and Peter’s followers that “we might have to spend time with them in heaven but we don’t have to hang around with them down here.” “To live above with saints we love , that will be glory. But to live below with saints we know, that’s a different story.” Paul says, “ God has redeemed you in order to create something new.” Ephesians 2 says, “to create one new man”. It’s sort of like when a man and woman get married, God says “And the two shall become one.” He says, “I’m not trying to make you get along being different. I’m trying to creat something that has never existed before.” One new man. The division runs too deep and has been going on for too long for anybody to think they can go back and fix it. You can’t. The wounds are there, the scars are there, the memories are there and they’re not going away. When you and I were saved, God placed us spiritually in a new environment. It’s a whole new realm and frame of reference. Read Ephesians 4:22. Paul is talking about communal relationships, not just individual Christian living. In this new environment God has moved us into, we have to change clothes. When you take a shower, you don’t put on the same clothes you had on before the shower. You don’t want to be clean on the inside and dirty on the outside, that cancels the purpose of being cleansed. When you and I came to Jesus Christ, we were bathed in the blood. We were cleansed from all our sins. What many do is, after having been washed clean in the blood of Jesus, they put on old clothes. Paul says take off your old clothes; they don’t fit with your new cleansing. Don’t go back to the world view you had before Christ. In verse 23 Paul speaks about the renewing of our minds. The old clothes us the old way of thinking. The new attire is the new way of thinking. When he talks about getting dressed, he’s talking about thinking differently. When folks get married, the focus should be on the new thing you are creating, not the old stuff you brought. In the early months of the American Revolutionary War, one of the greatest challenges George Washington faced was to change the thinking of his soldiers from that of being Virginians or New Yorkers and start thinking of themselves as Americans. When it comes to our lives or our families or our friendships or our nation, we all have to think about one another in a new way or we will never be all we were created and redeemed to be. God constructed His creation with unity and community in mind. In the body of Christ, when one member has a need that member can’t meet on his or her own, there is someone else in the body of Christ who can help. Every time one member helps another member, we add another piece to the new thing we are building. The body of Christ serves as an example to the world how this is all supposed to get done. In James 5, the Apostle paints a picture of each of us being lifesavers to everyone else in the body. None of us is going to give a speech heard by millions of people that will change the country. But we all have a circle of influence that we can have an effect on, and by doing that, we enlist more people in this new thing we are building. In a few weeks, we will celebrate 250 years of history of our great country. While the past has its place, where we are headed is far more important. When we pray today for our divided country, we need to pray that we use this upcoming celebration as the catalyst for building something new. Good message today Vince. Everyone have a safe week. Looking forward to next week. 🙌🙌🙌
