Το Ίδρυμα μας είναι πιστοποιημένος, μη-κερδοσκοπικός [501.c.3] θρησκευτικός οργανισμός με ιδιόκτητη γη, την "Ποντιακή Γη τού Νέου Κόσμου", όπου, στην ομώνυμη εκκλησία, στεγάζεται η εικόνα τής Παναγίας Σουμελά. Πέρα της εκκλησίας, στην ιδιόκτητη γη μας διαθέτουμε πολιτιστικό κέντρο καθώς και ένα ξενώνα. Το Ίδρυμα μας λειτουργεί υπό την πνευματική εποπτεία τής ελληνορθοδόξου Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής και μάλιστα ως το μοναδικό προσκύνημα των απανταχού εν Αμερική Ποντίων. Σκοποί τού Ιδρύματος είναι η πραγματοποίηση έργου στα πλαίσια τού θρησκευτικού, φιλανθρωπικού, εκπαιδευτικού και επιστημονικού του χαρακτήρα ίδρυσης και λειτουργίας του (σύμφωνα με το καταστατικό τού Ιδρύματος: … religious, charitable, educational, scientific purposes under section 501.c.3 of the Internal Revenue Code and other applicable federal and NJ State Codes).

Υπό την εποπτεία τού Ιδρύματος λειτουργούν οι εξής δύο διευρυμένες επιτροπές:

Η "Merimna Care" (το πρώην "Γυναικείο Τμήμα") και το "PHOS Council" (Pontian Hellenic Outreach and Support Council).

Η “Merimna Care" παρέχει επικουρικές υπηρεσίες στο Ίδρυμα για α) τη φροντίδα των μελών του, β) την υλοποίηση τού φιλανθρωπικού του έργου, γ) τη φροντίδα οργάνωσης των εκδηλώσεων του, και δ) τη πραγματοποίηση εκδηλώσεων της. Οι σκοποί ίδρυσης και λειτουργίας τής Merimna Care υλοποιούνται μέσα από την πραγματοποίηση α) κοινωνικών εκδηλώσεων, β) εκπαιδευτικών εκδηλώσεων προβολής τής ιστορίας, τού πολιτισμού, τής λαογραφίας και των παραδόσεων τού (Ποντιακού) Ελληνισμού και της Ορθοδοξίας, και γ) επιστημονικών εκδηλώσεων ενημερωτικού χαρακτήρα σε θέματα ευαισθητοποίησης (awareness), εγρήγορσης (alertness) και αυτογνωσίας (self-knowledge).

Το PHOS Council είναι μια πλατιά αγκαλιά (τεχνικά τη λέμε πλατφόρμα) που έχει σαν σκοπό να φέρει σε επαφή (να αγκαλιάσει) όλους τους εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες Ρωμιούς ποντιακής καταγωγής της Βορείου Αμερικής (και Ορθόδοξους Έλληνες γενικότερα) και να τους δώσει δωρεάν και απρόσκοπτη πρόσβαση είτε α) για να κάνουν τις δικές τους παρουσιάσεις για θέματα σχετικά με την Ορθοδοξία, τον Ελληνισμό και την Ομογένεια, β) να συμμετάσχουν σε κάποιες από τις εκδηλώσεις μας, ή γ) απλά να τις παρακολουθούν. Ταυτόχρονα, μέσω αυτής της πλατφόρμας, θα ενημερώνονται για τα προγράμματα, πρωτοβουλίες, δραστηριότητες, δρώμενα και βέβαια τις θρησκευτικές λειτουργίες τού Ιερού μας Ιδρύματος.

Στη συνέχεια μπορείτε να ενημερωθείτε για θέματα νομικά, οικονομικά, ιστορικά (τού Πόντου και τής Παναγίας Σουμελά) και διοικητικά σχετικά με τη λειτουργία του Ιδρύματος.

Holy Institution Panagia Soumela, Inc. (PS) or the “Corporation” was organized and incorporated for charitable, religious, educational and scientific purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code including the acquisition of real estate (the “Pontian Land of the New World”) for the:

• Construction of a chapel in honor of the Holy Mother of Mount Mela (Panagia Soumela) to maintain our Greek Orthodox religious faith, and
• Promotion and preservation of the Pontic-Hellenic history, culture and civilization. As a guiding principle, the Corporation functions as a source of knowledge and inspiration for the Pontic-Hellenic culture, in a manner consistent with its charitable mission and a place of retreat for our members and especially for the youth. PS was incorporated in the State of New Jersey on July 8th, 2005, and is a non-profit corporation under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code and pursuant to the “New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation Act.” The by-laws of HIPS are attached in Appendix C. On its private "Pontian Land of the New World" in West Milford, NJ, the Holy Institution achieves a devout realization of the annual Holy Pilgrimage of the Holy Mother and properly preserves and promotes the Pontian-Hellenic cultural heritage, history and Orthodoxy in a manner consistent with its charitable mission. PS is a Greek Orthodox self-governing religious organization, administratively independent of any other churches, religious or social organizations, or of any federations or other legal entities. PS is united by a common faith and spirituality with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and operates under the auspices of the Archdiocese for spiritual and ecclesiastical issues. PS recognizes the spiritual preeminence of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople who is acknowledged as first among equals. PS is not a parish in the Metropolis of New Jersey or in any other Metropolises or Archdioceses. PS is affiliated with the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA and Canada, Inc. (Federation) under the special status of the only Greek Orthodox organization of the Federation, as described in Article 26 of the Federation’s by-laws. The affiliation and collaboration with the Federation is based on the coincidence of our common homeland, origin, history, language and culture as well as on the identity of common objectives for the preservation of our history and culture and the promotion of issues related to Pontos and Pontians. History of Pontos

In approximately 1000 B.C., Greek speaking Ionians, inhabiting southern Greece, were forced out by invading waves of Dorians. The fleeing Ionians began to settle the Aegean coast of Asia Minor (present day Turkey) and founded the cities of Pergamus and Miletus. In 700 B.C., colonists from Miletus fled the Aegean coast and began to settle the coast of the Black Sea. They renamed the Black Sea from “Axenos” (“unfriendly” in Greek, “dark” in Persian) to “Efxinos (or Euxinos) Pontos” (“hospitable” or “friendly sea” in Greek). Strabo states in his “Geography”, that the city of Sinope was founded by Autolycos, one of Jason’s Argonauts, and that the city was conquered by the Milesians. From here, colonization expanded eastwards to the border of Colchis, modern day Georgia. From the 6th Century B.C., all of Asia Minor fell to the Persians. Later, in the 4th Century B.C, because the area was never conquered by Alexander the Great, Pontos remained under the rule of independent satraps. The greatest of these rulers was Parthian Mithridates VI, who was finally defeated by Pompeii. Thereafter, Pontos was absorbed into the Roman Empire and joined to the province of Galatia-Cappadocia. After the split of the Roman Empire in the 4th Century A.D., Pontos became the border of the East Roman or Byzantine Empire. In 1204, Constantinople was conquered by Crusaders and the city was in Latin hands until 1261. In 1204, the Empire of Trebizond was formed, with the single eagle as its emblem in deference to the Byzantine double headed eagle of the emperor. After many years of shrinking borders, losing battles and non support from the West, Constantinople finally fell to the Ottoman Turks under the leadership of Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1453. In 1461, the Emperor David Comnenos surrendered the Empire of Trebizond to the Sultan, and the Ottoman conquest of Asia Minor was complete. Since 1461, the Pontians have encountered constant persecutions and efforts towards mass forcible conversions to the Islamic religion. The Ottomans systemically and efficiently promoted atrocities and displacements in the beginning of the 20th Century. The most intense phase of the ethnic cleansing occurred in 1919-1923 with the establishment of Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) in the interior of the Ottoman state. This rule coincided with the establishment of the Soviet Union, which provided aid towards his nationalistic movement. On May 19th, 1919, Mustafa Kemal arrived to Amisos (Samsounta) as a representative of the Ottoman Government to restore order in the area of Pontos. Kemal began his criminal work by preaching hatred against the Greek Pontians. Topal Osman, a criminal member of the Kemalist group, is known in history as the biggest executioner of the Pontian Greeks. Kemal himself appointed Osman as his representative to the area of Pontos with unlimited power over the life and death of the Greek Pontians. Cities and villages populated by Greeks were burnt down, while the Greek Pontian people were subjected to deportation, exportation, abduction, torture, massacre and starvation. The great bulk of the Greek Pontian population was forcibly sent to work camps and to white death marches during winter cold and summer heat conditions. They died from the harsh elements, thirst and hunger. From the 700,000 Pontian Greeks who lived in Pontos in 1914, more than 350,000 have found martyric death by the Ottomans, Young Turks and Kemalists, in addition to over a million Armenians, Assyrians and other Christian populations living in Asia Minor. By 1923, the entire landmass of the historic Pontos had been expunged of its Greek Pontian population. The destruction of the Greek Pontian communities in this part of the world was total. In 1923, Orthodox Christians in Turkey and Muslims in Greece were exchanged according to the Treaty of Lausanne, thus ending the 27-century Greek history in Pontos.

 The Athenian - The icon of the Virgin Mary of Soumela, painted by the Evangelist Lukas, was placed initially in a monastery near the Acropolis of Athens and named Panagia the Athenian. Later, the icon was placed in a temple built in Thiva, one hour (92 km) northwest of Athens to honor her grace. This temple was also named Panagia the Athenian.
 The Soumela - In about 380 A.D. the icon miraculously “flew” to mountain Mela in Trapezounta (Trebizond) in Pontos, Asia Minor. After a dream, the two monks Varnavas and Sofronios began a long journey from Athens to find the icon at mountain Mela. Going through Meteora, Agion Oros (Holy Mountain) at the Athos peninsula, Maronia in Thrace, they continued on to Constantinople (Istanbul), and finally arrived at Trapezounta of Pontos at a village called Couspidi. There they were informed about the presence of mountain Mela where they discovered miraculously the icon in a cave one hour (42 km) south of Trapezounta. The two monks decided to build a monastery and the first temple was inaugurated with many festivities in 386 A.D. The monastery earned great respect and reputation throughout the entire Orthodox world until the tragedy of Greek Hellenism in 1922. In 1924, the monastery was ruined completely by the Turks.
 The Vermian - Before the monks of the monastery left Pontos, they buried the icon along with some rare heirlooms in the nearby monastery of Saint Varvara (Barbara). In 1931, the monk Amvrosios Soumeliotis brought the icon to Greece and it remained in the Benakis Museum of Athens until 1952 when Dr. Philon Ktenidis initiated the foundation of a new monastery on the top of the Vermion Mountain, one hour (92 km) west from the city of Thessalonica in Macedonia, Greece. Since that time, Panagia Soumela continues to offer Her Grace to the thousand of believers who visit Her every year.
 The Appalachian - In 1982, the organization "Panagia Soumela Pontion Amerikis" was formed in New York to revive the Holy Shrine of the Holy Mother in the "Pontian Land of the New World". In 2005, the “Holy Institution Panagia Soumela, Inc.” was formed in parallel with the existing organization to: a) achieve an ever wider participation and collaboration among Pontians, b) properly preserve and promote our cultural heritage, our history and Orthodoxy, c) support more efficiently the chapel and to achieve a more efficient usage of the surrounding space, and d) achieve a more devout realization of the annual holy shrine. On February 9th, 2006, after an unsuccessful attempt to build a chapel on another property owned by our Institution, the purchase of a 3.8-acre property, the “Pontian Land of the New World” was completed. In the following years we acquired 2 adjacent properties. The property is located at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains in West Milford, New Jersey, one hour (42 miles) northwest from New York City, a divine and fateful parallelism in locations, in a strategic location accommodating all centers of Pontian Hellenism in the USA and Canada. The property has one church, one social hall with office and kitchen, and one four-bedroom single-family house. All donations are tax deductible according to IRS 501(c)(3) for non-for-profit organizations. These are historic moments for the Pontian Hellenism of America and they require unity, collaboration, and willingness. Η ιστορία της Παναγίας Σουμελά

 Η Αθηνιώτισσα - Η εικόνα τής Παναγίας Σουμελά, έργο τού Ευαγγελιστή Λουκά, τοποθετήθηκε αρχικά σε μοναστήρι κοντά στην Ακρόπολη των Αθηνών και αργότερα μεταφέρθηκε στη Θήβα, μια ώρα περίπου (92 χιλιόμετρα) βορειοδυτικά τής Αθήνας όπου και κτίστηκε ναός προς τιμή της, η Παναγία η Αθηνιώτισσα. Γύρω στα 380 μ.Χ. η εικόνα «πετάει» στο όρος Μελά, κοντά στην Τραπεζούντα.
 Η Σουμελιώτισσα - Οι μοναχοί Βαρνάβας και Σωφρόνιος, κατόπιν οράματος, ξεκινούν από την Αθήνα να συναντήσουν την εικόνα στο όρος Μελά (από όπου στού + Μελά = Σουμελά). Αφού περνούν από τα Μετέωρα, το Άγιο Όρος, τη Μαρώνεια, την Κωνσταντινούπολη και την Τραπεζούντα καταλήγουν στο χωριό Κουσπιδή τού Πόντου όπου πληροφορούνται την ύπαρξη όρους Μελά στην περιοχή και με θαυμαστό τρόπο ανακαλύπτουν την εικόνα σε μια σπηλιά μια ώρα (42 χιλιόμετρα) νότια τής Τραπεζούντας. Οι δυο μοναχοί ξεκινούν την ανέγερση τής Μονής μέσα στις πλαγιές τού όρους Μελά η οποία εγκαινιάζεται το 386 μ.Χ. Από την πρώτη στιγμή η Μονή γνωρίζει μεγάλες στιγμές και το κύρος και η φήμη της απλώνονται στα πέρατα τού κόσμου μέχρι την τραγωδία τού Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού το 1922. Η Μονή καταστρέφεται παντελώς από τους Τούρκους το 1924.
 Η Βερμιώτισσα - Προνοητικοί οι μοναχοί, πριν πάρουν τον δρόμο τής προσφυγιάς, έθαψαν την εικόνα τής Παναγίας μαζί με άλλα βαρύτιμα κειμήλια στην παρακείμενη Μονή τής Αγίας Βαρβάρας. Το 1931 μεταφέρονται στην Ελλάδα από το μοναχό Αμβρόσιο Σουμελιώτη η εικόνα με τα κειμήλια και στεγάζονται στο μουσείο Μπενάκη στην Αθήνα. Εκεί παρέμεινε η εικόνα μέχρι το 1951 οπότε με πρωτεργάτη τον αείμνηστο Φίλωνα Κτενίδη κτίζεται η νέα Μονή τής Παναγίας Σουμελά στις κορυφές τού Βερμίου όρους, μια ώρα περίπου (92 χιλιόμετρα) δυτικά τής Θεσσαλονίκης. Στις 15 Αυγούστου τού 1952 εγκαινιάζεται η νέα Μονή και από τότε κάθε χρόνο χιλιάδες προσκυνητές συρρέουν να προσκυνήσουν την Μεγαλόχαρη.
 Η Απαλαχιώτισσα - Το 1982 ιδρύεται στη Νέα Υόρκη το Ιερό Ίδρυμα «Panagia Soumela Pontion Amerikis, Inc.» με σκοπό την αναβίωση τού Ιερού Προσκυνήματος τού δεκαπενταύγουστου στην «Ποντιακή Γη τού Νέου Κόσμου». Το 2005 ιδρύεται το ”Holy Institution Panagia Soumela, Inc.” το οποίο, παράλληλα με το υπάρχον Ιερό Ίδρυμα, αποσκοπεί: α) στην πλατύτερη συμμετοχή και σύμπραξη των Ποντίων, β) στην δέουσα διαφύλαξη και προβολή τής πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς μας, τής ιστορίας και τής Ορθόδοξης παράδοσης μας, γ) στην αποτελεσματικότερη στήριξη τής Μονής και στην αποδοτικότερη αξιοποίηση τού περιβάλλοντα χώρου της, και δ) στην ευλαβικότερη πραγματοποίηση των Ιερών Προσκυνημάτων.
Την 9η Φεβρουαρίου 2006, μετά από μια ανεπιτυχή προσπάθεια ανέγερσης Μονής σε άλλο ιδιόκτητο χώρο, ολοκληρώνει την αγορά «Ποντιακής Γης στον Νέο Κόσμο», ενός οικοπέδου 15,4 στρεμμάτων (3.8 acres) σε υψόμετρο 704 ποδιών, στους πρόποδες των Απαλαχίων Ορέων, στο West Milford τού βορείου New Jersey. Στη συνέχεια προστέθηκαν άλλα 2 όμορα οικόπεδα. Η Παναγία Σουμελά βρίσκεται μια ώρα (42 μίλια) βορειοδυτικά τής Νέας Υόρκης, ένας θείος και μοιραίος παραλληλισμός στις τοποθεσίες, σε στρατηγικό σημείο για να είναι εύκολη η πρόσβαση από όλα τα κέντρα τού Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού στις Η.Π.Α. και Καναδά. Στο οικόπεδο υπάρχουν εκκλησία, πολιτιστικό κέντρο με γραφείο και κουζίνα καθώς και σπίτι.
Όλοι μπορούμε να συνεισφέρουμε αρκεί να νοιώσουμε τη σοβαρότητα και τη σπουδαιότητα αυτής τής ιστορικής προσπάθειας. Όλες οι δωρεές σας απαλλάσσονται τής φορολογίας σύμφωνα με το σχετικό νόμο τού IRS, 501(c)(3) για μη-κερδοσκοπικούς οργανισμούς. Όλος ο Ποντιακός Ελληνισμός τής Αμερικής ζει ιστορικές στιγμές που απαιτούν σύμπνοια, συνεργασία και θέληση. Όλοι μπορούμε να βάλλουμε το δικό μας λιθαράκι σ’ αυτή την ιστορική προσπάθεια. Ευχόμαστε και προσευχόμαστε ότι όλοι θα συμπράξετε και θα στηρίξετε γενναιόδωρα αυτή την προσπάθεια.
