The month of September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. This devotion was given to us through St. Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373), who had a profound devotion to the sufferings of Our Lord and the sorrows of His Blessed Mother. During this month, we are invited to draw close to the Sorrowful Heart of Mary, to console Her in Her grief, and to unite our own sufferings to Hers.
Mary, Consolation of the Sorrowful 🕊️
There are wounds in the human heart that words cannot reach. There are sorrows we hold quietly, burdens no one else sees, and crosses that seem far too heavy to carry. Mary understands. She stood beneath the Cross and watched the Lamb of God, whom she carried in her womb and gave Her life for, now give His life up for the world. She remained there as the sword of sorrow pierced her delicate and Immaculate Heart while sharing in the mystery of Her Son’s suffering and death. In the suffocating and seemingly inescapable darkness of grief, She trusted. She teaches us that the crosses we carry are not carried alone and the bitter tears we shed never go unanswered. When the heart is weary, when suffering seems without purpose, and when we can do nothing but remain beneath the Cross, Mary is there, with us. She feels our every pain, ache, and sorrow and she implores us to place our wounds in Her loving and motherly hands. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us!
