Dear beloved community,

This is a busy time of year with end of school activities, graduations, gardening, grass mowing and thoughts of summer vacation. Our church year shifts gears in the summer too. Sunday school culminates with a special Sunday service that includes our children. They participate in worship and often share a bit of what they have been learning throughout the year.

This Sunday we will honor our children with a special service which still focuses on worshiping God, and will intentionally be more family friendly and perhaps a bit more fun focused. This summer we will continue to have activities for our children that connect to the topics we discuss. Everyone is important in our faith community, from the youngest to the oldest, and we are always learning how to be more welcoming and inclusive. Your thoughts and ideas are always welcomed.

I hope you will join us this Sunday as the children share some of the rules God gave us to live by and we share a story about some of the many names for God.

Hope to see you in worship!
Amanda

Dear beloved community,

Well, that was a short burst of summer, but hopefully it will be back soon. I am always amazed at how quickly the wildflowers burst forth this time of year. So much beauty no matter what is going on in the world. Take time to drink it in.
Sunday is Pentecost, which we Christians think of as the birthday of the church. You are invited to wear red (or orange or yellow if you have no red) on Sunday so our sanctuary is full of the color of fire! Our Pentecost coincides with the Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shavout) which was a thanksgiving celebration for first fruits of the barley harvest and it is also the day to remember the giving of the law to Moses on Mount Sinai.
It was at the time of that festival when the disciples were locked away praying and waiting for a new Advocate. The time of waiting ended when the Holy Spirit came upon them, like a rushing wind, like tongues of fire. The disciples were so filled with the Spirit that they went out into the streets telling their story so that all could hear. An added miracle was that those present, who had come from many places, were all able to understand what they said, each in their own language. Peter preached his first sermon. He remembered what the prophet Joel had said and reminded them all that, old and young, slave and free, men and women, Jew or Greek... all are the same as far as the Spirit is concerned. That is a message to remember for all time, that God loves all people and we all have valuable gifts to share. Let’s talk more about all of this on Sunday.

Hope to see you in worship!

Dear beloved community,

Spring is upon us for real! The leaves are bursting forth on branches that just last week looked empty and void of life. The song birds are beginning to chirp the morning into being, and the spring peepers raise their deafening chorus from the local bogs and ponds in the evenings. I find inspiration and reassurance, when I am out in nature, that the world is still a beautiful place and God is with us.

This week in worship we will celebrate Earth Day and you are invited to share any new ways you have found to care for our planet. I often share some information about how I shop more responsibly and avoid creating plastic waste whenever possible. As you know by now, recycling is a good idea but it is not terribly effective. We may try very hard to recycle everything but if everyone does not keep up with the rules and recycle only what is accepted it all goes in the landfill anyway. Using less plastic and shopping locally, not killing pollinators, using organic and natural remedies (rather than toxic chemicals) in your yard and garden are some of the easiest and best ways to take care of our earth.

Our gospel reading is the story of friends walking with Jesus on the road to Emmaus. In their deep sorrow they didn't recognize him until he broke bread with them. We are in the Easter season and remembering how Jesus was revealed to his followers after his death and resurrection. Let's talk more about all of this on Sunday.

Hope to see you in worship!

Dear beloved community,

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter with family or friends and managed to take some time to sit with the deeper meaning of this Holy Day. We are now in the season of Eastertide, a season in which we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. We will explore some of the events that took place as the disciples came to terms with all they had observed and been taught. The disciples were hidden away and losing hope until Jesus returned to them behind locked doors, or beside them along the road, and their hope was renewed. The Holy Spirit blew over them, filled them, and their lives were changed.
This week we will celebrate with JOY as we observe Holy Humor Sunday. Bring your sense of humor as we offer a few jokes, along with our joy in worship.
The Spirit still moves among us. We may find reassurance in the doubts the disciples experienced as we see their faith strengthen and courage bloom in them. The opposite of faith is not doubt, it is apathy. Having curiosity and the courage to ask questions is how we learn, grow and strengthen our faith. Having honest conversations is how we invite others in to learn and grow in their faith too.
This week we will hear about Thomas' request to see for himself the wounds that prove Jesus is really alive. I appreciate his honesty as he was willing to admit his need for reassurance, and that Jesus gave him exactly what he requested. We will talk more about all of this on Sunday. We gather every Sunday as faithful followers, doubters, questioners and pursuers of the truth. All are invited, and all are welcome.

Hope to see you in worship!
