Lafayette Friends Meeting

Hello Friends, we hope that Covid is nothing more than an inconvenience to you. We have a number of folks who have tested positive, and so we have decided to return to Zoom meetings until the end of January, when we’ll reconsider. It hasn’t been decided what to do about the next Potluck or our recently formed Song Group, which sometimes meets an hour prior to Meeting for Worship, but we’ll figure it out.

We are very sad to report that one of our Friend of Friends died recently after a long illness. A neurobiologist and science administrator at Purdue, he was an intelligent and kind man. He was more than worthy of the accolades mourners gave him, and he will be missed.

We are still helping with the Lafayette Urban Ministry’s shelter meal by making up a good supper for forty. Diners can also take a grab-and-go bag with breakfast in it. Friends are also helping at the Food Bank.

We set aside our Quakerism 101 study, which meets monthly for discussion, until after the holidays and we are ready to begin again. At the end of this month we’ll be looking at the function and history of Yearly Meetings.

There are 3 new attenders, including 3 children, and a request for membership. It’s quite exciting! We have a new arrangement for first Day School and we will be pulling Committees for Clearness together very soon.

We now have a quarterly Game Night at LFM! It’s hosted at a Friend’s private home, a pitch-in dinner is served and various games are played. The first session was Halloween night and some of us wore costumes. Hopefully Covid will have crested before the next Game Night, but if it hasn’t, we’ll have to find a way to play in open air! Maybe a field day event?

This Sunday, August 1st, we will have singing before worship at 9am. Potluck will happen afterwards!

HISTORY OF LAFAYETTE FRIENDS MEETING

Lafayette Friends began meeting around 1940 under the leadership of Merritt and Margaret (Peg) Wildman Webster and Hannah Meissner. In 1955 we officially organized as West Lafayette Friends Meeting under the Friends World Committee for Consultation. The name was changed to Lafayette Friends meeting in 1962.

Since 1966 we have met at the home of founding member Hannah Meissner. For a brief period when Hannah was not able to host the Meeting in her home, we met at University Church. When Hannah died in 1989 she left her home to the Meeting, and we have been meeting there ever since.

One of our early members, Tom Hull, who passed away in December, 2019, was one of the “Dream Team” of four founding organizing members of Lafayette Urban Ministry, which has grown to become one of the most important and influential social service agencies in the county. Because of Tom, LUM is the focus of much of our commitment to our community in both volunteer and financial support.

Because our Meeting House is large, we have rented out three bedrooms and a self-contained apartment in the basement to graduate students at Purdue. The rental income has made it possible for us to cover the costs of utilities, insurance, and maintenance of the house while also providing low-cost housing for students in need. Originally most of our tenants were from universities in Honduras or other Central and South American countries with whom we have had close ties through a Purdue professor who was a member of the Meeting. In recent years, however, this closeness has waned, and finding and maintaining good relationships with our tenants has become more difficult, putting strains on the time and resources of our members. We are currently considering the sale of the Meeting House and seeking other places to meet that will be less of a burden on our small membership.

Today, Michelle gave us the history of Hanna (Hellinger) Meissner.

Hanna was jewish and left Germany right before WWII. She was a professor at Purdue University focusing on Social Work.

She left her home to the Meeting, and that is where we still meet today.
