The shield of faith is the believer’s confidence in the faithfulness of Jesus. It is not faith in faith itself, nor confidence in our own strength, but a settled trust that God is true, His promises are sure, and His Word can be relied upon in every battle. Like the Roman soldier’s large shield, faith stands between the believer and the fiery darts of the enemy—darts of fear, doubt, accusation, disappointment, temptation, criticism, and pride. When those attacks come, faith lifts up the truth of God and refuses to receive the lies of the wicked one.

"The Shoes of Peace"
Ephesians 6:15
Today we have specialized shoes for every conceivable activity. The shoes of a Roman soldier were specialized, too. They were boots/sandals, called caliga. Josephus said that they were "thickly studded with sharp nails" like cleats. These war boots enabled infantrymen to dig in and make a stand in hand-to-hand combat.
