Pentecost Reflection: The Wild, Whimsical Spirit
“The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it,
but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.
So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
— John 3:8 (NRSV)
On this Pentecost, we remember not only the descending flame, but the unpredictable, uncontainable movement of the Spirit. John’s Gospel reminds us that the Spirit is like the wind — unseen, yet deeply felt. It arrives unannounced, stirs our stillness, and then moves on, leaving transformation in its wake.
The Spirit is like the hummingbird, elusive and vibrant. It darts in and out of our vision, too swift to grasp, yet its presence lingers. It brings color to the mundane, life to the ordinary, reminding us that the holy often comes in flashes — brief, beautiful, and breathtaking.
The Spirit is like music — whimsical and alive. It stirs something deep within us, bypassing the intellect and speaking directly to the heart. Its melodies dance on the edge of mystery, awakening our soul’s longing and satisfying it all at once.
The Spirit is like the wind — cooling us when life overheats, disturbing us when we’ve grown complacent, and sometimes even toppling what no longer serves the kingdom of God. It cannot be domesticated. It is free, untamed, and always holy.
This is the gift of Pentecost: not merely tongues of fire, but the promise that the Spirit is still moving — in the hummingbird’s flight, the music’s rise and fall, the wind’s unpredictable path. The Spirit fulfills the soul of the one who seeks and follows, not with certainty, but with presence.
