Every scrap of light…
This phrase from the Deborah Cooper poem below has been drifting in and out of my spirit lately. Sometimes when life and the world is just too much all we need is a scrap of light. Not the whole sunny day, just a scrap. Just enough to hold onto some corner of hope that we are OK and that the world can be healed. “It will take each tiny consolation to mend the world,” she says, and we understand the truth of it, don’t we? Every little blessing, every gesture, every kindness holds back the shadows just enough to let a scrap of light in and give us a chance. Today, what do you notice, post-Easter, about where the light is? The light that went out on Good Friday is re-kindled—but where do you see it? What blessing is there, what offers up hope to your imagination in the living of these days? Collect the light, my friends, every scrap of it…it is true that it will take each tiny consolation to mend the world. So breathe deeply and remember to focus on the light. Peace to you, Stacy

Across the street
a neighbor strings white lights
along the eaves of his house.

Across the world
they sleep out in the cold,
our neighbors too,
wakened by gunfire.

I see the way the chickadees
take turns at the feeder.
I watch a woman take her husband’s hand.

I see the way the sun will find
the only interruption
in dark clouds,
to toss this amber light
across the pines.

I watch the way a young man
lifts his mother from
the wheelchair
to the car,
the shawl he lays
across her lap.

I save up every scrap
of light,
because I know that it will take
each tiny consolation
every day
to mend the world.
