Tonight, beginning at sundown, is the biblical appointed feast day Yom Teruah, often called the Feast of Trumpets. It falls on the first day of the seventh biblical month, at the new moon. Following the Hebrew calendar , that is today, Friday, September 11, at sunset and continues through tomorrow night at sundown.
This is not a cultural Jewish feast (although the Jewish people celebrate it, of course). It is a biblical appointed feast of the Lord's-- He calls it HIS feast, and it was given to His people long before His people entered into the promised land. Jesus also kept the feast days, along with His disciples, after His death.
Did you know that the appointed feast days (there were 6 of them, plus the Day of Atonement) were being kept while major events were unfolding:
*PASSOVER-- the sacrifice/crucifixion of Jesus Christ
*FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD--- the burial of Jesus
*FIRST FRUITS- the resurrection of Jesus
and 50 days later,
*PENTECOST--when the Holy Spirit was given to dwell IN and empower Jesus' followers.
Those are the spring feasts of the Lord.
The fall feasts are:
*THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS-- Sounding of the shofar, gathering of His people together on the Sabbath to remember
*DAY OF ATONEMENT-- repentance, preparing of hearts
*FEAST OF TABERNACLES-- remembering that the Lord Tabernacled (dwelled/lived) with His people in the wilderness, and Jesus tabernacled with us as Messiah on the earth, and He will tabernacle with us again and for all eternity when He returns for His bride (the church)
These were "shadows" of things to come. And JESUS is the one who cast the shadow! In HIM is the fulfillment of what has happened already and what is yet to come. That is worth remembering, and celebrating!
In Leviticus 23:23–25, the Lord sets apart the first day of the seventh month as a day of rest, a sacred assembly and a memorial marked by sounding. Numbers 29:1 calls it a day for sounding the shofar.
We are to stop our ordinary work (a Sabbath rest) gather before Him with other followers of Jesus (the sacred assembly) and mark the day with a sound that demands attention (blowing of the shofar/trumpet or shouting)
Teruah can describe a shout or a trumpet blast. It is a sound you notice. How easily we hear God’s Word without letting it interrupt us. So let's let Him interrupt our lives on this day, and everyday.
Tonight at 7:00 pm, we are meeting together at Soul's Harbor, with other followers of Jesus, to recognize this appointed feast day. We gather, we REST in Him, we remember the day by blowing shofars, trumpets (any noise maker, including a shouting voice) as a wake-up call ,a warning, and a celebration of the Lord Jesus Christ's return. We will feast together (bring your favorite dish to add to the table).
We will worship, pray, eat and fellowship and remember what Jesus Christ has already fulfilled, and look forward to the promise that He will fulfill at His return to earth.
People, get ready!
Paul writes that Jesus will descend from heaven with a commanding shout and the shofar of God.
(1 Thessalonians 4:16–18).
16"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. 17After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord." He tells believers to encourage one another with these words.
Jesus is our rest and our rescue. That's what we celebrate and remember on this special appointed day of The Lord.
