Asbury United Methodist Church

Asbury United Methodist Church Asbury United Methodist Church is the oldest Methodist congregation in Duluth. Methodism came to Duluth in May, 1856, when Rev. For a while, Rev.

James Peet paddled his canoe from the city of Superior, Wisconsin, across to Oneota in West Duluth, near the present B**g Bridge. Peet met with worshipers in their West Duluth homes. In a short time the congregation formed the L.F. Merritt Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church and built at 46th Avenue West and West Michigan Street. That church moved, merged and evolved into present day Asbury UMC.

Christian Education Report

Our Sunday School term is quickly drawing to a close on Sunday, May 17, 2026. We have studied more than 10 miracles in the last two years and compared these miracles to our lives today. We will move on to another subject in the fall. Additionally, a contemporary Christmas program in 2025 telling the Birth of Jesus through the eyes of the animals allows us to do a more traditional program in 2026. More to come on the upcoming Sunday School year and our 2026 Christmas program in future announcements and the Messengers.

Thank you and my sincere appreciation to those responsible for making sure our children get to Sunday School! Without the adults in their lives, Asbury would not have a Sunday School. Our Christmas program would not be as strong as it is without our church family. Your support and encouragement mean everything.

Our Christian Education Team would not be a success without the people behind the scenes. Sandy Winklesky, Ruby Slennes, Carol Johnson, Donna Mickelson give so much of themselves to Asbury and I am blessed to have them as members of the Team.

Thank you to everyone for your support, encouragement and involvement with the Sunday School children of Asbury! We’ll see everyone back in Sunday School in September!

Church-School Partnership Team Report

Asbury has a very dedicated, caring and willing group of people fulfilling a MN Annual Conference-encouraged program which joins churches with local schools. We have spent three years developing a close working relationship with Laura MacArthur Elementary School and have been able to help the school with many projects.

The most important and continuous project is the Food Distribution program done on Thursdays during the school year. Each opportunity gives us a renewed commitment to meet the school’s needs as much as we are physically and financially able.

Sue Baker is Asbury’s liaison between Laura Mac and the church and spends a lot of time at the school volunteering. Thank you to Sue and to all of our Team members for your dedication to the Program. Without you we would not be one of the few churches in the state successfully fulfilling the Conference expectation of the Church-School Partnership Program.

More opportunities will present themselves with the new school year and we will keep everyone posted as new projects come up. Please remember that anyone interested in being part of the Church-School Partnership Program is encouraged to be a part of our Team. We are looking for volunteers with a willing heart, and
the ability to share some of their time and physical energy!

Thank you to all of our current Team members for being a part of the Program. I am deeply blessed and very proud of our Team.
