Hey gang! Today's reading is 1 Kings 21-22. Here is where I focused:

13 Meanwhile, the messenger who went to get Micaiah said to him, “Look, all the prophets are promising victory for the king. Be sure that you agree with them and promise success.”
14 But Micaiah replied, “As surely as the Lord lives, I will say only what the Lord tells me to say.”
15 When Micaiah arrived before the king, Ahab asked him, “Micaiah, should we go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or should we hold back?”
Micaiah replied sarcastically, “Yes, go up and be victorious, for the Lord will give the king victory!”
16 But the king replied sharply, “How many times must I demand that you speak only the truth to me when you speak for the Lord?”
17 Then Micaiah told him, “In a vision I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, like sheep without a shepherd. And the Lord said, ‘Their master has been killed. Send them home in peace.’”
18 “Didn’t I tell you?” the king of Israel exclaimed to Jehoshaphat. “He never prophesies anything but trouble for me.” (1 Kings 22:13-18)

Micaiah was the lone prophetic voice to tell King Ahab the truth about his plan to invade Ramoth-gilead. 400 “prophets” all told him that he would surely succeed, but Jehoshaphat (King of Judah) told him to find “a prophet of the Lord” to ask – that kind of tells you something, doesn’t it? Micaiah was encouraged by the messenger who was sent to find him to speak the same as the false prophets, and he told him he would speak only what the Lord tells him to say. That had to take great courage.

Ask yourself, “Am I willing to say what the Lord has spoken to me, even if I stand alone?” “Am I willing to speak what is right even if I speak alone?” “Am I willing to do the hard thing even if I do it alone?” That, my friends, is walking the narrow path. My prayer today is that we would have the courage to walk against the trend and the world and choose to follow and obey the Lord in all things.

Blessings!

Hey gang! Today's reading is 1 Kings 18-19. Here is what grabbed me:

8 So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. 9 There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. But the Lord said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 Elijah replied, “I have zealously served the Lord God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.”
11 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. (1 Kings 19:8-12)

Elijah obeyed the Lord and went where he was told to go to wait for Him. All these huge events happened: a mighty windstorm, an earthquake, a fire – but the Lord was not in any of those. Instead, He showed up as a whisper (some translations say, “a still, small voice”).

When does the Lord most often speak the loudest to me? In those moments when I can quiet all the big noises in my life. It’s when I take time and finally focus on a passage or verse of Scripture without distractions. Because my mind tends to pull me in lots of directions (ADHD!!), I might have to re-read something a couple of times to cut out the other voices or thoughts that crowd my mind. How do you drown out those noises? A lot of times, I have to put my phone somewhere else; I can’t have the tv on; I have to be by myself. When I make an effort to hear from Him, He never fails to speak.

Blessings!

Hey gang! Today's reading is Proverbs 31. Here is what grabbed me:

10 An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life. (Proverbs 31:10-12, ESV)

This is probably the first time I’ve paid attention to how Proverbs 31 begins. The note given at the start of this proverb reads: “The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him.” It was important to the king’s mother to impress on him what qualities he must look for in his bride. She taught him that an excellent wife is more precious than anything he would find valuable. He can trust her with anything and everything because she understands her role as helper and supporter, and walks beside him with unconditional love.

When it comes to finding an excellent wife, I did an incredible job. Well, let me actually say that God did an incredible job. Kimberly completes me in so many ways its indescribable. During our wedding reception, my friend Drew toasted us and prayed over us this blessing: “May today be the day you love each other the least.” The band Chicago has a song with that same sentiment: “I love you more today than yesterday.” Kimberly is more than my helper (we affectionately refer to each other as “Bone” and “Rib”). She is truly my best friend. I trust her with everything in me. She does good to me in ways beyond anything I can ask or imagine. She is very much more precious to me than anything I find valuable. My prayer is that she could say the same for me.

Husbands, take a moment today to thank God for your wife. Ask Him to bless her completely. May you love her more today than yesterday.

Blessings!

Hey gang! Today's reading is Proverbs 16-18. Here is my reflection:

There are “friends” who destroy each other,
but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24)

What does this verse make you think about? It makes me think about the acquaintances I have who might tell me what they think I want to hear, but then talk about me behind my back to someone else. But there are others who are part of my small circle to whom I can say anything, and I won’t be judged for it. They may have a word of correction for me, but I know that it comes from a place of love and relationship, and a desire to see me at my best.

This verse has a cross-reference to another verse I read today. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.” Those are the friends I need in my life; they are the friends you need in yours.

This makes me grateful for the guys I consider closer than a friend, those guys who stick closer than a brother. They know who they are, and I pray that they see the same in me. If you don’t have a friend like that, ask the Lord to work. Even when you feel alone, know that these verses powerfully describe him.

Blessings!
