Supper ended and you sat still, hands folded, because that's just what happened at that table in that house. Nobody had a name for why some evenings needed a little extra discipline — there was just an understanding that a certain look from your father meant business. You learned to read a room fast, and you learned exactly how far you could push before things got serious. It wasn't gentle by today's standards, but it built a kind of respect that stuck with you your whole life. Different times, different rules, and somehow everybody still turned out just fine.

One television meant somebody was always losing the channel argument, and one phone meant you learned real fast how to wrap up a conversation before your sister started banging on the door. One bathroom for a family of five was its own kind of negotiation, with a system nobody ever wrote down but everybody understood. You didn't think of it as making do — it was just how a house worked. Looking back, sharing everything probably taught you more about patience than anything else in your childhood. Somehow the house never felt small, even when it clearly was.
