Church of the Loving Shepherd

Church of the Loving Shepherd A community congregation, shaped by worship, diversity, the broad outlines of Christian tradition, and the quiet, vibrant life of God's spirit.

Church of the Loving Shepherd is a community congregation, its life shaped by our worship, by the diverse experiences of its members, by the broad, historic outlines of the Christian tradition, and by the quiet, vibrant life of God’s Spirit in our midst. At its best it challenges members to discover themselves and ways of living that nourish themselves and the larger community. At its most commonp

lace it offers transforming worship, deeply felt care and opportunities to serve both on site and where there are needs in the 'greater' West Chester community. The congregation’s home, Bournelyf, provides a special physical environment for its life, described by some as a “thin place”. Visitors are welcome, and needn't fear 'arm-twisting'. An ideal of the congregation supports the freedom of each member to follow his or her own spiritual path while sharing life within a supportive community. Child care is available at most services. You can find full schedules and upcoming events at www.churchofthelovingshepherd.org. The church gathers for worship Sundays at 10 AM, though at present worship is virtual as we follow the Governor's guidelines re: Covid. A link can be found on the church's website. The International Council of Community Churches, to which CLS belongs, is a post-denominational fellowship, providing a network of congregations and centers and connections to the National Council of Churches of Christ, Churches Uniting in Christ, and the World Council of Churches.

If you’ve noticed a lot of activity happening around our church buildings lately, it’s because of YOU.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our church family through the Anniversary Sunday Offering, we have been able to begin important repairs and improvements that help care for the place we call home. Every hammer, every repair, and every project underway is a reminder that ministry happens because people believe in the mission of CLS and our future.

We are deeply grateful. Truly. Without your love, prayers, volunteerism, and financial support, we would not be able to minister on these grounds.

One of the next major projects we are continuing to raise funds for is the replacement of the rotting front porches on the Church House. These repairs are necessary to help preserve our buildings and keep them safe and welcoming for everyone who enters.

If you have not yet had the opportunity to contribute toward these projects and would still like to help, offerings can be made at any time. Every gift helps us continue building a future of hope, hospitality, and ministry together.

Thank you for loving this church so well. ❤️

Last Saturday, we joined hearts and footsteps with people around the world for World Labyrinth Day: Walk for Peace.

Together with friends from Kendal Crosslands and our CLS community, we stepped onto the labyrinth path embracing its quiet rhythm and ancient wisdom. The journey invites us into the sacred movement of the three R’s:

✨ Release — letting go of what we carry
✨ Receive — opening ourselves to what we need
✨ Return (or Renew) — stepping back into the world changed, grounded, and ready

With each turn, each pause, each breath, something softened… something opened.

We closed our time not in silence, but in unity, lifting our voices and intentions for one another, for our community, and for a world in need of peace.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can do… is simply walk together with purpose.

The Prayers that were read on Sunday during Prayers of the People: A Sacred Time of Sharing (Shared by Meg Cowan French)

Our brother Jesus, you set our feet upon the way, and sometimes where you lead we do not like or understand.
Bless us with courage where the way is fraught with dread or danger.
Bless us with graceful meetings, where the way is lonely.
Bless us with good companions where the way demands a common cause.
Bless us with night vision when we travel in the dark, and keen hearing where we have not sight, to hear the
reassuring sounds of fellow travelers.
Bless us with humor - we cannot travel lightly weighed down with gravity.
Bless us with humility to learn from those around us.
Bless us with decisiveness where we must move with speed.
Bless us with lazy moments, to stretch and rest and savor.
Bless us with love, given and received.
And bless us with your presence, even when we know it in your absence.

Lead us into exile, until we find that on the road is where you are, and where you are is going home.
Bless us, lead us, love us, bring us home, bearing the gospel of life. Amen.
- Prayer by Kathy Galloway, Author and Minister, Iona Scotland Community

We bring before you, oh God, the troubles and perils of people and nations
The sighing of prisoners and captives…
The sorrows of the bereaved…
The needs of strangers
The helplessness of the weak
The despondency of the weary…
- St. Anselm #860 New Century Hymnal

Church of the Loving Shepherd holds the family of Trooper O’Connor close in our hearts during this time of profound loss. We also stand with his friends, fellow officers, and all in our community who are grieving.

We are deeply saddened by his death and grateful for the life he lived in service to others. Today we remember the person he was to so many; family member, friend, colleague, and neighbor.

May his loved ones feel surrounded by care and support in the days ahead. We honor his service and hold all who mourn in our prayers.

A note from Tom Bare, one of our Peafowl caretakers!:
Last Sunday our grandson Thomas fed some snacks to Samuel (the CLS peacock!). Yesterday he gave Ann and I a thank-you note which included the following message: “The most fun I had was with the peafowls because it reminds me about how beautiful something can be (yes, I am talking about you, Samuel)”.

If you would like to bring your children or grandchildren to feed the peacocks, please reach out to the church office. We have daily volunteers who take care of them who would be more than happy to introduce you! They are gentle birds who are fully spoiled by our team of caretakers. We are smitten by their beauty and personalities.
