The Episcopal Church in New England - Province 1

The Episcopal Church in New England - Province 1 Province 1 coordinates ministry, outreach, & relationships between Episcopalians across New England. We coordinate ministries and share resources.

Our Province defines, in part, how the Episcopal dioceses in New England work together through networking, sharing resources, and establishing collaborative ministries. We have a history of working closely and well together, creating new initiatives and offering them not only to our own dioceses but also to the Church at large. We believe that there are things we can do better together rather than

separately. We gather leaders from the dioceses around common ministry foci. We also have informal groups focused on projects or special initiatives. Members come together for leadership development, formation opportunities, and sharing of resources. Our Provincial Coordinator and Executive Committee support and facilitate connection between Province 1's lay and ordained ministers. We meet as a Conference. The Conference of the Province consists of the House of Delegates and the House of Bishops. Lay and clergy Delegates are elected, three from each diocese, and all New England bishops are members. These two Houses come together at least once each year to further the work of the Church and regulate all business of the Province. We invite new possibilities. Our Province is called into a re-visioned place of empowering the ministry of all baptized, laity and clergy together. We are working together to take the spark of our renewed vision into the our communities and our world with all the extraordinary opportunities God provides. We invite you to be part of that adventure by gathering with us in cyberspace and face to face!

The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts Racial Justice Commission is hosting a free online screening and conversation with the filmmakers of A Reckoning in Boston on Tuesday evening, February 24th. The film streams on Kinema at 6:30 pm. The Zoom conversation follows immediately afterwards at 8:00 pm. Participants need to register for both events:

The conversation will be moderated by The Rev. James M. Hairston, Priest-in-Charge of St. Augustine St. Martin in Boston who is a member of the Racial Justice Commission and grew up in Dorchester where the film is set. Father James is president of the Bishop John Burgess Massachusetts chapter of United Black Episcopalians (UBE).

“A Reckoning in Boston touches a deep emotional core and offers a lot to unpack and reflect upon about Boston’s past and present history of racism, particularly during this Lenten season of repentance,” said Racial Justice Commission Chair The Rev. Dr. Derrick Muwina. “Our Baptismal Covenant calls on us to ‘strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being.’ We hope that you will join this special screening and conversation for our diocese.”

A Reckoning in Boston powerfully explores systemic racism, economic inequality, street violence, trauma and lack of affordable housing in Boston by looking at the lives of Kafi Dixon, Carl Chandler and others in the Dorchester community. The film is “an absolute must see – especially for white audiences,” wrote Boston Globe film critic Ty Burr.

A Reckoning in Boston has been screened by educational and religious groups, and at film festivals, all over the country. It has been featured on public television through PBS Independent Lens. The film won “Best Feature Documentary Award” at the Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival.

As Maine communities continue to be terrorized by ICE agents, Bishop Brown shared a pastoral message offering support, hope, and opportunities for practical action. "In every age and time, when people hurt and whenever human dignity erodes, faith leaders have stepped in. We are they who stand for the rule of law and for due process, and so we shall rise!" he wrote. Over the past few days, many Mainers have been asking what they can do to help and support their immigrant neighbors.

Right now, one of the most valuable tools we have is accurate, verified information. It is crucial that all Maine residents understand their rights and know what resources are available.

That’s why ILAP worked with and the Refugee and Human Rights Clinic at Maine School of Law () to create this webpage as a resource for ALL Maine people: ACLUMaine.org/PreparingForIce (link in bio).

In addition to providing instructions for a direct encounter with ICE, this page can help you make your workplace safer for your immigrant colleagues, advise you on what you can do if you witness an ICE encounter, and show how you can support someone who has been detained.

Please share widely to help make sure as many people as possible have access to this information. . .
