Our children are given to us for a time to cherish, to protect, to nurture, and then to salute as they go their separate ways. They too have the light of God within, and a family should be a learning community in which children not only learn skills and values from parents, but in which adults learn new ways of experiencing things and seeing things through young eyes. From their birth on, let us cultivate the habit of dialogue and receptive listening. We should respect their right to grow into their own wholeness, not just the wholeness we may wish for them.

We cannot hope to transfer more than a little of our wisdom to our young people – if wisdom it is. We have increasingly to stand back as they grow older, knowing that the problem is passing out of our hands. They go off to college – or to live in a flat of their own, that aim and delight of so many young people. At last they have privacy, freedom from supervision and criticism, independence – but they are now fully exposed to all that we fear….

This is the moment of disengagement, when parents must tell themselves that the young people are no longer their children and that they are outside their discipline…. It is also the moment for parents to tell themselves that their children are not alone. They are in the hands of God.

After the screening there will be a discussion with Lizzie Hershberger led by Rachel Yoder, followed by an opportunity to buy a signed copy of Lizzie's book Behind Blue Curtains: A True Crime Memoir of an Amish Woman's Survival, Escape, and Pursuit of Justice.

On May 23 at 1pm, the organizations will host a follow-up panel discussion at the Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A. Panelists include Shell Feijo and Alesha Packer of DVIP/RVAP and Katy Rasmussen of JC SART.

About the documentary:

Based on groundbreaking reporting, Keep Quiet and Forgive follows the courageous journey of Lizzie Hershberger, a former Amish woman who breaks her silence about sexual abuse in her community and ignites a nationwide movement of Amish survivors. Growing up in a traditional Minnesotan Swartzentruber Amish community, Lizzie was taught to “forgive and forget.” But nearly 30 years after experiencing her own traumatic r**e, she takes the bold step to report her case to the police — challenging Amish communities everywhere to confront and address hidden abuse.

As Lizzie travels across the country, she becomes a beacon of hope for Amish and Mennonite survivors navigating generational trauma, deep-rooted shame, family ties and su***de. Her mission doesn’t stop at breaking the silence; she also helps others navigate the difficult path of rebuilding their lives after being excommunicated from Amish culture. Filmed over five years in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Missouri, Indiana, and Wisconsin, Keep Quiet and Forgive offers an eye-opening look into one of the world’s most insular communities.

❤️ The Artemis II pilot just delivered an impromptu message we all need to hear:

The four astronauts on the Artemis II NASA mission have broken a 55-year-old record, traveling farther into space than any human has gone before. Every human milestone is significant, and an Easter message from the mission’s pilot, Victor Glover, reminds us why.

Speaking with the astronauts, a CBS News reporter noted that the Apollo 8 crew delivered a Christmas Eve message during their 1968 mission. He asked whether the Artemis II crew had a message to share for Easter. When the microphone floated to Glover, he said he hadn’t prepared anything, but offered some impromptu thoughts:

“I think these observances are important, as we are so far from Earth and looking back at the beauty of creation. I think for me, one of the really important personal perspectives that I have up here is I can really see Earth as one thing.

And you know, when I read the Bible, and I look at all of the amazing things that were done for us, who we’re created, it’s…you have this amazing place, this spaceship. You guys are talking to us because we’re in a spaceship really far from Earth. But you’re on a spaceship called Earth that was created to give us a place to live in the universe, in the cosmos.

Maybe the distance we are from you makes you think what we’re doing is special. But we’re the same distance from you, and I’m trying to tell you—just trust me—you are special. In all of this emptiness—this is a whole bunch of nothing, this thing we call the universe—you have this oasis, this beautiful place that we get to exist together.

I think as we go into Easter Sunday, thinking about all the cultures all around the world, whether you celebrate it or not, whether you believe in God or not, this is an opportunity for us to remember where we are, who we are, and that we are the same thing, and that we got to get through this together.”

People of all faiths—and no faith—appreciated the message. Below, see our favorite reactions and watch the video in full.
