InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit

InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit We bring people of many faiths together to work toward a harmonious community based on our highest and best values.

Join us in our efforts towards conciliation, education, and connection. The InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit is a faith-based civic organization made up of visionary religious and lay leaders of many faiths whose shared values compel them to work toward a community that lives together in harmony. We offer many enriching programs to our community. BRIDGING TO BELONGING: A COMMU

NITY VALUES PROJECT
Our latest program, Bridging to Belonging: A Community Values Project, seeks to (re)ground all of us in the values that inform our lives and bring us closer to the Beloved Community. Through small discussion groups of diverse community members, who, led by our trained moderators, come together in a safe space to share their individual stories, and learn about one another. Participants move from storytelling to dialogue to collaboration over a three-session unit. RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY JOURNEYS
A unique, immersive interfaith educational experience for hundreds of Tri-County area middle school students. Students learn differences are okay and not to be feared, and that learning about people of different religions, ethnic groups, and races can offset negative stereotypes. RDJ incorporates the National Council for the Social Studies College, Career and Civic Life (C3) Framework and enhances Michigan Department of Education Grade Level Content Expectations for the study of World Religions in 7th grade. Journeys are underway for the 2022-23 school year. WORLD SABBATH OF RELIGIOUS RECONCILIATION
The mission of the World Sabbath is to teach our diverse population in Metro Detroit that the work of building a community of justice, equality, respect, and peace is a calling we all share – all of us, no matter what our faith tradition might be. Featuring a Children’s Procession of Peace, this annual program developed 21 years ago, highlights that God is a God of peace and that all faiths are called upon to build a world of tolerance and justice. Most importantly, we are impacting our children, our teens, and our young adults. Our World Sabbath processional includes children of many faith traditions, proudly waving the peace banners they decorated themselves. These children come together to sing the song “We Are Children of Peace.” Each year, we honor the World Sabbath Peacemaker Award to someone who is making a difference in the interfaith world, bringing people together to build community. RELIGIOUS LEADERS FORUM
The Religious Leaders Forum of Metropolitan Detroit is a gathering of diverse senior faith leaders who believe that the significant moral and social values of their respective religions are important considerations for our entire community. They share an unshakeable belief that the grace of God is abundant in our community. Since 2010, Forum participants have met quarterly to foster mutual respect and to seek ways that their collective influence might help the metropolitan Detroit community to thrive and prosper. They have focused on such issues as literacy, household energy/warmth and the moral imperative of providing water to all households. EXPLORING RELIGIOUS LANDSCAPES AND “ASK A…”
Many of us do not have the opportunity to learn first-hand about religions other than our own, which can lead to misinformation and stereotyping. Exploring Religious Landscapes and “Ask a …” enable participants to learn about specific religious beliefs and practices directly from their adherents. Programs for Exploring Religious Landscapes have featured individual panels of Muslim and Hindu women and youth, and perspectives on women’s image in Christianity.

“Ask a …” features several individuals from a specific religious group who answer audience questions about their faith and customs. The atmosphere is friendly, open and informal. Recent programs have included "Ask a Latter-day Saint", "Ask a Sikh", and "Ask a Jewish Person". In moments of fear and grief, our strength is found in standing together across faiths and communities. We are reminded that courage takes many forms: standing beside those who are hurting, remaining open to learning from one another, and leading with compassion instead of division. Each small act of courage matters, and together these acts help strengthen the bonds of belonging, solidarity, and peace within our communities.
With this commitment in mind, we share the following open letter from the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit, expressing solidarity with our Muslim neighbors following the attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego.

🌙✨ Eid al-Adha: A Celebration of Faith, Sacrifice, and Generosity ✨🌙

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is one of the most sacred holidays in Islam. It honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s faith, trust, and willingness to sacrifice in devotion to God.

Observed during the annual pilgrimage season of Hajj, Eid al-Adha is a time for prayer, gratitude, generosity, and community. Many Muslims celebrate by gathering with loved ones, sharing festive meals, giving to charity, and ensuring those in need are included in the celebration.

At its heart, Eid al-Adha reminds us of the importance of compassion, selflessness, and caring for one another.

🤝 At the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit, we believe it takes courage to learn about one another’s traditions, to listen with empathy, and to build meaningful connections across our diverse communities—just as this holiday calls us to practice generosity, faith, and care for others.

🌍✨ To all who celebrate, we wish you a joyful and peaceful Eid al-Adha.

💫 What is one way you show generosity or care within your community?

🇺🇸✨ Memorial Day: Honoring Service and Sacrifice ✨🇺🇸

On Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment continue to shape the freedoms and opportunities we experience today.

For many, this day is also a time of reflection—gathering with loved ones, visiting memorials, sharing stories, and remembering those who gave their lives in service to others.

Memorial Day reminds us of the deep human cost of conflict and the importance of working toward a world rooted in peace, compassion, and understanding.

🤝 At the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit, we believe it takes courage to learn about one another’s traditions, to listen with empathy, and to build meaningful connections across our diverse communities—just as this day calls us to honor sacrifice, seek understanding, and work toward a more peaceful future.

Today, we remember with gratitude and respect all who gave their lives in service.

🕊️✨ How do you honor or remember those who came before us?

🌟✨ Declaration of the Báb: A Celebration of Unity and Spiritual Renewal ✨🌟

Beginning tonight through May 23, Bahá’í communities around the world observe the Declaration of the Báb, a sacred holy day in the Bahá’í Faith.

In 1844, The Báb declared Himself to be a messenger preparing the way for a new era of spiritual understanding and unity. His message emphasized hope, peace, and the interconnectedness of humanity.

This holy day is often observed through prayer, reflection, and gatherings with community and loved ones.

🤝 At the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit, we believe it takes courage to learn about one another’s traditions, to listen with empathy, and to build meaningful connections across our diverse communities—just as this holy day calls us to embrace unity, hope, and spiritual renewal.

🌍✨ To all who celebrate, we wish you a meaningful and peaceful observance.

🌾 Shavuot, the beautiful springtime holiday within the Jewish religion, marks the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. It’s one of the three pilgrimage festivals, alongside Passover and Sukkot, and it's deeply rooted in the Jewish heritage and agricultural calendar by celebrating the first grain harvest of the season. Shavuot can also be celebrated by lighting candles, staying up to study Torah, decorating homes with flowers, attending synagogue services, reading the Book of Ruth, and eating festive meals that often include dairy foods. This year, Shavuot begins at sundown on May 21 and ends at sundown on May23. It’s a time for joy, community, and reflection.

Today is the final day to experience “Twice Called: The Blessed Martyrs of Algeria” — a moving exhibit reflecting on faith, courage, peace, and interreligious dialogue.

Through powerful stories and images, the exhibit invites us to consider what it means to choose presence, compassion, and connection even in the face of fear and division — values that deeply resonate with the work of the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit.

We’re especially grateful for the leadership of Fr. Piero Masolo, an avid supporter of IFLC and someone who continues to model the importance of relationship-building across communities and faith traditions.

If you have the opportunity, we encourage you to attend this meaningful final day experience.

We’re grateful for thoughtful leaders like Rick Joseph an IFLC board member, who continue helping foster meaningful conversations across communities and faith traditions.

The recent discussions surrounding Pope Leo XIV have reminded many people of the importance of compassion, human dignity, and caring for one another — values that resonate deeply with the work we strive to do every day through the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit.

In a world that can often feel divided, we are thankful for leaders who continue choosing dialogue, empathy, and connection.

As he celebrates his first anniversary leading the Church, Pope Leo XIV is being praised by Michigan Catholics for his views on immigration and war.

What does courage look like in everyday life?

Not the kind that makes headlines—
but the quieter, braver choice to reach across difference.
To stay curious instead of certain.
To listen when it’s easier to turn away.
To care, even when it feels complicated.

We've launch Stories of Courage — a new blog series from the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit.

This series shines a light on real people — people just like you — who are choosing:
✨ connection over division
✨ learning over assumptions
✨ compassion over fear

These are stories of the courage to:
• connect when it’s uncomfortable
• learn when we don’t have all the answers
• stay curious about one another’s lived experiences
• share honestly
• collaborate across differences
• care deeply about the communities we’re building together

Each story is an invitation.

An invitation to reflect:
What does it really mean to know one another?
Where is courage being asked of me right now?
What could become possible if I chose connection?

So follow along. Watch this space. Explore these stories. Let them challenge and inspire you.

And if you have a story of courage, we want to hear it.

Because courage is contagious.
And it starts with us.
