Happy Easter! Today at church, the priest will be wearing white vestments and the church may be filled with white lilies, symbolizing the joy of Jesus’ resurrection.

The Easter season begins today and goes until Pentecost. How do you celebrate Easter?

Today we prepare for Easter, we may be dying Easter eggs or cleaning our houses for the celebration. There is no Mass offered this morning, but when night falls, the Church will begin the first Easter Celebration at the Easter Vigil Mass!

The Easter Vigil usually begins with a bonfire outside, where everyone lights a candle. Attendees then proceed into church, filling the church with light. This Mass can be long, with readings foreshadowing Jesus’ death and Resurrection, and celebrating people who are entering the Catholic Church through Baptism, First Communion or Confirmation.

Make sure to check out your local parish website for Holy Saturday Mass times.

Good Friday is the day Jesus was tortured, mocked, crucified and died. Today is called Good Friday because Jesus saved us from our sins through his suffering and sacrifice.

A powerful way to reflect on the day is to remain silent, especially between 12pm and 3pm when Jesus was on the Cross. You can also meditate, visit a Church for the Stations of the Cross, or watch the movie “The Passion of the Christ”.

Today is the final day Jesus is on earth and tonight he gathers his closest friends for the Last Supper. Holy Thursday is the first day of the Easter Triduum, a very sacred day. During Mass, the priest will wash the feet of parish members in memory of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.

We read in Luke 22: 14-20 “When the hour came, he took his place at the table with the apostles. He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, for, I tell you, I shall not eat it [again] until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; for I tell you [that] from this time on kingdom of God comes.” Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.””
