The Festival of Jesus' Resurrection, April 5, 2026

Our worship focus for today:
Jesus Christ has triumphed! Pick any of our spiritual enemies. Jesus’ resurrection crushes that enemy. Sin is washed away; Jesus’ resurrection is proof of our justification before God (Romans 4:25). The devil’s power is broken; he is defeated by Jesus (1 John 3:8). Death is destroyed and we will live forever (1 Corinthians 15). Jesus’ victory changes eternity. That change is yours everyday. We live in the peace of an eternally secure relationship with Jesus.

The sermon is based on the text from Matthew 28:1-10 - God's Beautiful Surprise

Serving us today:
• Presiding Minister: Pastor T. Wempner
• Preacher: Pastor J. Zarling
• Worship Accompanist: B. Bilitz
• Band Director: M. Mengel

Without the resurrection of Jesus, death would appear permanent. No one would have come back from the dead to explain what happens after death. Jesus told his disciples what would happen. But they were slow to believe the Easter truth. God ensured that his people had witnesses to assure that Jesus did not remain dead.

He lives, and it makes a difference! I too shall live. Death has become a pathway into paradise. Jesus has already made me spiritually alive by giving me faith in his resurrection. In every possible way, Jesus takes me from death to life.

Life is full of either/or moments. Some of them are of little long-term consequence. I will have either the chicken or the fish. Some of them matter more. I will accept the new job offer or keep my current job. One either/or moment is life-changing for every human being. Either Jesus is still dead, or Jesus rose from the dead. If Jesus remains dead, he is both a failure and a fraud. If Christ has not been raised, we are still in our sin.

But Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed!

It makes all the difference! He lives!

We invite you to join us for worship with us as we celebrate our risen Savior this Easter season!

Join us this Easter for our new series: What Difference Does It Make?

• Preacher: Pastor Tim Wempner
• Worship Accompanists: Deb Aufdemberge

During this special week, as we think about Jesus' suffering and death, we will listen to words from Psalm 22 that pointed ahead to Jesus' crucifixion. The clear connections between Psalm 22 and the account of Jesus' death make it clear to us that God had planned out our salvation to the last detail.

Psalm 22:31
They will proclaim his righteousness
to a people yet unborn—
for he has done it.

“He has done it.” A Psalm that prophetically spoke of Jesus’ crucifixion, ends with a simple statement of the result of Jesus’ death. “People yet unborn” will hear of the righteousness that Christ won and the Church will continue to proclaim the glory of Jesus’ love.

He did it! He took away every sin. He reunited us with the eternal God who created us to be his dear children. With grace that cannot be measured or even imagined, Jesus purifies us in the sight of God. Every moment that stands before us – the good, the bad, the failures, the successes, death itself, everything! – can be viewed through the filter of Jesus’ love. His righteousness has been poured onto you.

It is true, so believe it! Jesus did everything to save you. Let that peace fill your soul with peace and let his righteousness be your confidence that all is done to save you. Anyone or anything that says otherwise is a liar!

Or, as Jesus himself said, “It is finished.”

During this special week, as we think about Jesus' suffering and death, we will listen to words from Psalm 22 that pointed ahead to Jesus' crucifixion. The clear connections between Psalm 22 and the account of Jesus' death make it clear to us that God had planned out our salvation to the last detail.

Psalm 22:18
They divide my garments among them
and cast lots for my clothing.

It was over. Jesus’ situation was sealed and would not change. The soldiers were so confident of the outcome that they callously played games for Jesus’ clothes. After all, he would never need them again.

One can only imagine the despair of crucifixion. Slowly, but steadily and relentlessly, death approached. The pain only intensified as the minutes passed. The only potential relief was death.

All seemed lost. The soldiers had no doubt in their minds how the day would end. Jesus would lose.

But look again, for Jesus is no ordinary person. The Son of God left the perfection of heaven so that he could be on that cross. In perfect love, he let them pound in the nails. He accepted every moment of the pain. He let his enemies think they would win. He even let death look triumphant over him. The outcome seemed carved in stone.

But Jesus did not go there to lose. He was winning the world back to himself. What appeared like an inevitable loss was the greatest victory. Jesus would take away the punishment for all sins. He would set humanity free from judgement and give a peace that passes understanding.

Look again, in faith, and see that what Jesus was doing for humanity he was doing for you! What appeared to be a defeat was the greatest victory of your life. You have been cleansed and, through faith, brought into the eternal kingdom of Christ.

Now, we live under the cross. It often appears that we are losing to the events of life. It appears we are weak and unimportant.

Faith sees the truth. Those seeming loses are illusionary. You belong to Jesus Christ. You are forgiven. You are loved. You are prepared to live in this world as God’s holy child. You are prepared for heaven.

Nothing is lost because Jesus Christ is your Savior!
