When we read the Bible, it’s not just for ancient history, beautiful poetry, or life advice—it’s ultimately all about... Jesus.
Every book of the Bible contributes to God's unfolding plan to redeem humanity through His Son.
This is why it’s a supernaturally powerful experience to read each book through a christocentric lens, asking:
• How does this book point to Jesus?
• How does this reveal God’s heart to rescue and restore?
Reading the Bible this way strengthens our faith, opens our eyes to God's wisdom, and fills our hearts with worship.
As I read the book of Ruth this morning, I thought, wow. This book provides such a colorful example of what I'm talking about.
This short, four-chapter story is more than a tale of loyalty and love.
It’s about redemption, grace for outsiders, and God’s sovereign ways.
Check out my quick summary, and then I'll bless you with a commentary that will show you how the book points to Jesus.
Ready? Let's goooooo.
Ruth, a Moabite widow, chooses to follow her Israelite mother-in-law from Moab back to Bethlehem. Though a foreigner and former enemy of Israel, Ruth is welcomed into God’s covenant people—and becomes the great-grandmother of King David, placing her directly in the genealogy of Jesus Christ! (Matt 1:5)
This reminds us:
• The Gospel is for all peoples and nations.
• No one is too far from grace. 🌍
This leads me to the question...
WHAT IS A KINSMAN REDEEMER?
Because this is 🔑 to the story.
In Israelite culture, a kinsman redeemer was a male relative who:
• Married a widow to preserve the family line
• Restored inheritance and protected the family legacy
Boaz does this for Ruth. He doesn’t just rescue her from her ircumstances—he redeems her future.
JESUSIS OUR GREATER BOAZ!
Boaz is a picture—a foreshadowing—of Jesus.
Jesus:
• Took on flesh to become our kinsman (Heb 2:14–15)
• Had the right and power to redeem us
• Paid our debt with His own blood (1 Pet 1:18–19)
• Brought us into the family of God (like Boaz did for Ruth) and gave us an eternal inheritance (Eph 1:5–7)
We were spiritually bankrupt and without hope. But Jesus stepped in and said: “I will redeem.”
BOTTOM LINE:
The Book of Ruth isn’t just a love story. It’s a Gospel story. It points to the One who redeems not just our past—but our eternity.
His name is Jesus and His name is the ONLY name that redeems and rescues humanity, you and me, from sin.
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” - Ac 4:12
Have you trusted in Jesus alone to save you from your sins?
Praise God! 🙌
