One of the best things you can do for your kid's self-worth is reinforce the idea that you love them no matter how they act or what they do. Remind them that while you may be disappointed in a choice they’ve made, your love is without condition. Positive reinforcement in this way boosts their confidence and reminds your kid that who they are is not solely what they do.

Tough conversations are hard to have with our kids, especially when it comes to boundaries for their bodies and what is considered safe and unsafe. But these are conversations still worth having, especially when they involve secrets.

In honor of National Child Abuse Month, take some intentional time to remind your kids of the difference between surprises and secrets: surprises always have an expiration date, secrets don't. Safe adults don't ask kids to keep secrets.
