The final speaker in Holy Spirit Parish’s 2025–2026 Guest Speaker Series on the harmony of faith and science will be Brother Guy Consolmagno, S.J. Br. Guy will speak on “Adventures of a Vatican Astronomer” on Saturday, May 2, from 1:30–3:30 p.m. at St. Martha’s Church Hall in Kennebunk.

Br. Guy is President of the Vatican Observatory Foundation and a scientist specializing in asteroids and meteorites. His academic background includes a B.S. and M.S. in Planetary Science from MIT and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, he served in the Peace Corps teaching physics and astronomy in Kenya before entering the Jesuit order.

Assigned to the Vatican Observatory in 1993, Br. Guy has been part of an institution established by the Holy See to conduct astronomical research and promote public outreach. Utilizing advanced technology and state of the art CCD cameras, the Observatory has pioneered innovations in large telescope design and conducts research across many fields, including the search for life beyond Earth.

The Vatican Observatory operates two research sites: one at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, and the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) in southeastern Arizona. Built through private donations and operated in collaboration with the University of Arizona, VATT is a premier astrophysics research facility.

ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF HUMANOID ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

The Holy Spirit Parish adult faith formation team is happy to welcome Dr. Reinhard Vehring as the next presenter in the Guest Speaker series on Sunday afternoon, April 12th at 4:30pm at St. Martha. This year’s theme for the Guest Speaker series is the ‘harmony of faith and science,’ and Dr. Vehring will be speaking about the ethical implications of artificial intelligence.
