One of the remarkable things about Jesus is that He calls us to participate in his Kingdom advancing mission with him. He calls us to partner with him in life - in big things and small things. After Jesus rose from the dead he told his disciples to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations - that people everywhere would come to know and be like Jesus. He wants everyone to know him. And he promised he would be with us always. He called them to partner with him in preaching the gospel of the kingdom, casting out demons, healing the sick and reversing the evil effects of this broken world. But in the resurrection account in John 21, Jesus invited them to bring fish to the breakfast he is serving them. A very small thing. Now, they had been out all night and caught nothing. He told them where to catch the fish and they caught a huge miraculous catch. And when they got there to the shore he already had fish cooking. He didn’t need their contribution - he knew where the fish were hiding, he could have supplied enough fish for all of them and done breakfast without them, but he invited them to bring what they caught. This is part of the tenderness of Jesus - he wants our lives to be embedded with eternal significance and divine partnership. “God always invites us to bring what He has given us - our gifts, abilities, talents and resources - to participate in His kingdom activity for an eternally significant, fruitful life. He likes partnering with us. I have partnered with God my whole life, and it has been a great joy. Actually, the greatest joy in life is feeling like you have a loving relationship with the God of the universe and are partnering with Him to make a difference that lasts for all eternity” ~ The Tenderness of Jesus.
