SERVANT
Last month the post was about "Service". This post is about being a "Servant". What does it mean to be a servant? When we hear the term servant, it often brings to mind someone of a lower social status, poorly educated, doing menial tasks, subject to the will of a master. The Bible shows us a different meaning of servant. What does it mean to be a servant of Christ? 2 Timothy 2:24 says a servant of Christ must be a follower of His example, :And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,". In Romans 12:9-18, Paul gives a more complete description of a servant to Christ. "Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love, in honor preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you; bless and curse not.Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." Can we, who claim to be servants of Christ, truly say that we abide by this description? Do we let the fear of rejection or ridicule keep us from being an open and honest servant of Christ? Whose opinion do we value more - mans' or Gods'? Romans 14:18 tells us that a true servant of Christ is acceptable to God and man. "For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men." Colossians 3:24 says that we, as servants of Christ will receive the inheritance. "Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ." We all want to hear Jesus say "Well don, thou good and faithful servant". Isn't this the best reason to be a humble and obedient servant to Christ?
