Are We Doing Our Best?

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with
all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” (Mark 12:30)

Every new year, billions of people around the world make New Year's Resolutions. They make goals for living a healthier life,
goals for improving relationships with family and friends, goals toward a better working environment, and goals about living a better
life overall. And while they desire to make the necessary changes to fulfill those resolutions, most will stop trying after the first month or
so, and the majority will never do it, only to make the same resolutions the next year.

As Christians, there are things that we must be constantly doing in order to improve our spiritual lives. We must be constantly
examining ourselves in order to make sure we're living a faithful life to God (2 Corinthians 13:5). We must be walking after God and
Jesus (Ephesians 5:1-2). We must be setting our minds on spiritual and heavenly things instead of on the things of this world (Matthew
6:33; Colossians 3:1-2). We must put God first in our lives, as the passage above tells us. These are the goals Christians must strive for
if we want to make our spiritual lives better.

But the question is, how are we doing? Are we doing our best to make sure that we're doing what God wants? Are we making
every effort possible to improve our lives, sacrificing what needs to be sacrificed in order to go to heaven (Mark 9:43-48)? Or are we like the world with their resolutions and give up after a few months? Do we make big plans and goals, only to revert back to our old lives and decide we'll wait until “the new year” to try again? Is living a Christian life important to us or is it something we only say is
important?

The truth is, if we're not growing, we're dying. In Hebrews 5:12-14, the writer was disappointed in the people he was writing to
because they hadn't grown as they should. In 1 Corinthians 15:34, Paul was disappointed in the brethren because they didn't grow in
knowledge of God. They weren't doing their best, and it showed in their lives. If the Hebrews writer and Paul were disappointed, how do you think God felt?

Are we doing our best when it comes to living the Christian life? Are we really doing all we can to live better spiritually? Are we
really giving our best effort in living for God and Jesus? Or have we given up and plan to do better “next year”? God has never spared
giving us His best. We should give Him our best each and every day. If you're not, don't wait until the “new year” to start doing your best.

Do it today!

Being Different From The World

These days, it is difficult to see the difference between Christians and non-Christians. If you listen to the way some talk, it is no different than those in the world If you look at
how they dress, it is the same as those in the world. If you see what kinds of jokes that entertain them, it is no different than
what entertains the world. Many Christians today have lost their distinctiveness.
But that is not how Christians are to live. Christians are to be distinctive and different from the world. In 2 Corinthians 6:14-16, Paul lists several things that are not the
same, and for each pair he asks the Corinthians how can fellowship exist between the two. The answer is, of course, it
cannot. Then he tells the Corinthians in verse 17, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive
you...”. Since we are no longer of the world, we are to be separate from it; we are to be different from the world.
In 1 Peter 2:9, we're described as being a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a peculiar people. Each of these terms shows how different we are.
Each points to the fact that we're not like the rest of the world. We once were part of the world, but we're not any longer. We've come out of the world and now we're separate. And
that is how we must remain.

Sadly, some Christians do not want to be different. They don't like sticking out or doing things that bring attention to them. They want to hide and be a Christian in secret and act like their friends out in the world. They believe
that they can do everything they used to do
and still be a Christian. They think they don't have to come out and be separate.
In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus compares us to light. We are to stand out in this world and be noticed. We're not doing it for our glory, but to show people the way to God. This world is a very dark place. If we hide our lights, how can we direct them to the truth? Too many Christians are hiding their lights under bushels instead of raising them high for the world
to see. If we care about people, we will be different in order to lead them to God.
As Christians, we must learn to become different from the world. We must think of it as a good thing, something that is important and necessary. We, being different, are lights to
the dark world. If we become dark like the world, how can anyone come to the truth? If the world cannot see our light, they will remain lost. Let's shine our lights brightly for God!

Am I Therefore Become Your Enemy….?

Many people today do not like to have someone come to them and tell them they are wrong. They will usually become defensive and say that they aren't wrong. They will
try to deflect it, by saying the person telling them is wrong is some way (and if they can't think of anything specific right away, they'll usually say that what they're doing is wrong).
When many are told that they're wrong, they will lash out at the person telling them and treat them as an enemy.

Paul faced the same thing with the Galatians. People were bringing in false doctrine, trying to lure the Galatians away from the truth. Paul wanted them to remain faithful to the truth he taught them (Galatians 1:6-9). He asks them a
question in Galatians 4:16 - “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?”. Paul was telling them what they needed to hear to get their lives right, and the false preachers were turning the people against him. He was telling them the truth, and that was causing him to become their
enemy.

People have always thought that those who preach the truth are the enemy. In 1 Kings 22, Ahab wanted Jehoshaphat to join forces with him in battle. When Ahab brought all of
his prophets out to Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat asked if there were any prophets of God in the country. Ahab spoke of one man, Micaiah, but said he hated him “...for he doth not
prophesy good concerning me, but evil...” (1 Kings 22:8). Why was Micaiah always prophesying evil towards Ahab? Because Ahab was a wicked man. Micaiah was simply telling Ahab the truth, but Ahab didn't like him doing it. He only wanted to hear good about himself, and when people didn't do
it, they were his enemy.

It's sad when Christians turn against other Christians when confronted about their sins. They should realize the reason they're being informed that what they're doing is wrong
is because the other Christian cares for them. They're telling them they're wrong out of love. But many Christians fail to see that and instead attack the one coming to them and treat them as an enemy. They don't like the truth, they don't want to hear the truth, and anyone who tells them the truth is the enemy.
We all know how difficult it is to approach a person and tell them they're wrong. We shouldn't make it more difficult on the person coming to us by turning against them, yelling at them, and treating them like the enemy. We should realize they're doing this out of love for our soul, and be thankful they took the time to tell us. The one telling us we're wrong isn't
our enemy, but our friend. Let us learn to see them that way.
