Truths About Turkeys, Predators & Trapping

Predators impact wild turkeys — that’s a hard truth. Nearly 75% of nests fail each year, and most poults never make it to adulthood. So does trapping equal more gobblers? The answer isn’t as simple as many think.

Regulated trapping is a valuable tradition and a legitimate outdoor pursuit, but science shows predator control alone doesn’t guarantee stronger turkey populations. The real difference-maker? Habitat. Quality nesting, brooding and open forest structure give turkeys the edge — even when predator numbers stay the same.

Trapping can help in specific situations, but without long-term commitment and strong habitat work, gains are often short-lived.

The takeaway: enjoy trapping for what it is, but when it comes to helping wild turkeys thrive, habitat always comes first.

Even if you’ve never seen a skunk, chances are you’ve definitely smelled one.

Alabama is home to two skunk species—the striped skunk and the eastern spotted skunk. Most people recognize the striped skunk, but have you ever spotted the eastern spotted skunk?

These little guys are about the size of a squirrel and can even do a handstand before spraying! They’re rarely seen, so state biologists want your photos if you happen to encounter one.
