This Advent, we are anticipating with joy and trepidation the arrival of God in the world. In Luke's gospel, verse 5 opens the epic story: "In the days of King Herod..."

These were dark times for the heroes of the story. They lived under the oppressive rule of an evil King, a greedy empire. But even in a time like that, God chose to come into the world with vulnerability and humility. There was much to be afraid of, but over and over, God's people insisted on hope. Even today, when there is much to be afraid of, we insist on hope.

Welcome to the story of Advent.
