Green Hill Cemetery will observe Arbor Day on Friday, Apr. 24, with an exhibit about four horticulturists buried in the cemetery and a guided tour of the cemetery highlighting special varieties of trees.
The program begins at 3:00 p.m. in the cemetery office. An exhibit there will celebrate the lives of Ellen Brandt Fahnestock (1850–1940), Agnes N. L. Harbaugh (1895–1976), Henry Eichholz (1864–1939) and Ferdinand S. Gilbert (1861–1934; pictured here).
Quinn Coulter, a Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Young Ambassador, will conduct a tour of the cemetery, highlighting around 15 notable species of trees. He is a sophomore at Waynesboro Area Senior High School.
Following the tour, light refreshments will be served in the cemetery office.
For years, Mrs. Fahnestock obtained tree saplings from the state nursery and distributed them to school children on Arbor Day.
Mrs. Harbaugh had a long and varied career in horticulture, including employment at the Los Angeles City and County Arboretum.
Eichholz gained prominence among floriculturists by propagating numerous new varieties of flowers.
Gilbert was an energetic horticulturist whose topiary zoo along South Potomac Street brought Waynesboro national attention during the 1920s and 30s. He also served 45 years as superintendent of Green Hill.
